I'm wondering if an ultra cheap slave flash such as this:

would work with my 550EX?

You must use your 550EX only in manual mode, otherwise a preflash will trigger these accessory flash units before the shutter actually opens.
In addition, these units are very low power. So, they will need to be used as accents lights or pulled very tight to illuminate a very small area.

Specifications say guide number is 26. Doesn't say if it's meters or feet.
I hate when they do that.
Considering it's a bare bulb, battery operated flash, I'm guessing feet.

I would also guess feet, and I would bet that it is inflated.
