Looks like it is over sharpened to my untrained eye.
There is a black line surrounding the heron.

I think you went too far that time.

It was over sharpened. You can tell by the black halo around the bird. As soon as that halo appears, its too much.

I did the original sharpening on a full sized image and it looked much better. When I reduced the size for posting here, it became oversharpened. I guess one should wait until the very end, after resizing, before sharpening?

too much sharpening, bad crop, too blue on the second.
Always leave fly away space above and in front of the bird where possible.

1st is focused on the water and exposed for the grass not on the bird.
If you look at the right side you can see where the focus is.. right in the middle of the water between the bird and shore.
a higher numbered f-stop would have helped the shot.
