Such tight crops, the 2nd one, usually aren't posted for critique. It looks like you've cropped maybe 1/6th of the entire frame at the most.

It's not always how close you can get to your subject or how much of the frame your subject fills, but the composition matters more. If you can't get real close to your subject, like your example, try a composition that helps show where it is - gives context to what you are trying to show.

Your subject is dead center of your frame, image 1. A better composition would be to have the heron at the bottom left 1/3 of the frame which might show more of the surroundings in cluding the sky. Having the bird at the left side shows where the bird is going - to the right side of the frame.

Thanks, thats the kind of advice I'm looking for. When I have a shot that I like, I can't always figure out the best way to crop it.
