hayath & RipN'Pix, thank you for the replies :)
Mookalafalas, check this out

I am fairly new to photography, and even newer to macro photography. I use a Canon 100mm macro and I have copied LordV's settings as a starting point. So I use my 430ex (on camera w/ diffuser) and my iso = 100, aperture = 11, shutter = around 200. I hand hold the camera and manual focus
The Macro Talk section has a ton of info.
Good luck!

RJX, thanks a lot! I've been browsing a lot of this stuff lately, but it often turns out that a direct question to someone in the know is sometimes more helpful than a lot of webpages! I like LordV's tips a great deal. He explains stuff really well. Most of those pages are 5 years old, though. I haven't seen these specific ones, and appreciate your pointing them out to me. [Edit: here is one from last year that is really detailed, but I think the one you pointed out is actually better, with more practical pointers for a noob like me! http://www.dgrin.com/showthread.php?t=143373]
I just (two minutes ago!) ordered a really nice looking large diffuser that attaches to a flash for $5, delivered (ebay)! I doubt bargains like that were available when those pages were written. I'm not proud, but think it will be as good as the coke can/paper towel duct tape models, but save me the trip down arts and crafts memory lane.

rjx, I followed your advice. I'm a cheapskate and bought a Nissin budget flash, but seems to work pretty well. I got these this morning before work. Nothing spectacular, but much better than my first round...

That's a great starting point! All photography takes practice but from my limited experience I think macro photography can be the toughest to get right. I think it's too easy to get a bad shot imo. At least from my experience it is.
Keep the images coming. :)

Yeah, its not point and shoot, that's for sure! Its awkward using the flash, and virtually impossible keeping stuff in focus, even if it stays still. Those tutorials (like the one you pointed out) help a lot, though. There are lots of good pointers there.
Of course, this lens is great for regular stuff, too. I still haven't done any portrait, but I love it for regular shooting. A 90mm prime isn't supposed to be a walkaround lens, but when you add macro it becomes pretty flexible...

thanks, ya it felt good, especially since my stuff was stolen and this is the replacement stuff paid via insurance....most of the stuff in my signature being shipped to me.
So far in hand I only have the 7D, tamron 90 and tamron 10-24 which all arrived today.
But I have a tamron 28-75 and a sigma 150-500os otw plus the flashes, triggers, tripod ballhead etc.
I will let you know once I test out the 468...in 6-12 weeks ;)

It wouldn't surprise me if you did, as I applied sharpening. I'm not sure if I know what sharpening artifacts look like. Is it something in the hairs on the perimeter?

Yeah,, have a look at the textured patern in the out of focus areas.. Being in the out of focus areas, it's very easy to fix..
If you allow me to edit and repost your shot, I'll show you..

All I did was run the blur tool in CS4 at about 50% over the out of focus areas..
Took about 45 seconds..

Thanks! You're right, that looks much better (now that I see what was wrong!). Actually, I did the PP for this in lightroom. Sharpening doesn't usually make much difference with pictures I take with this lens, but I tend to use some anyway just because I hate it when the "hit" images take when they are shrunk and uploaded makes 'em look kind of soft (and dark and unsaturated...).

You're welcome.. I don't shoot a lot of macro but I use the 90mm f/2.8 Macro for portraits where it is absolutely brutally sharp, especially with female portraits, comparable to my 135L..
Both lenses don't need much sharpening in post processing to get the best out of them..

Yeah Chris,, I even take my Tamron 90mm out as a walk around lens shooting street candids.. It gets the job done very well..
Because I shoot a lot in dim lighting conditions, I'm toying with the idea of buying a EF 100mm f/2 to compliment my EF 50mm f/1.4 and 135L for street candids.. But since I don't shoot a lot of macro the poor Tamron 90 could sit on the shelf unused..
I don't know,, still tossing the coin:rolleyes:

thanks, ya I like like my tamron stuff and that I can buy 3 of them instead of 1 "L" lens. And for what I do they are good enough for me.
I have only had the new 70-300vc since yesterday but it looks like a keeper. The VC is outstanding and sharpness seems pretty good. Nothing in it's zoom range can touch it for the money. I actually got a couple pictures of that same bug with that lens before I ran and grabbed the macro.

It looks like you are a little ways off, and yet the flash seems to be from directly over its body. Do you have some wild flashmount set-up, or did you just reach out with one hand and hold it over the bug?

The AF sound is just horrible on this lens and my copy could really use calibration, it's not spot on at F/2.8 but it doesn't matter since I use my 85mm 1.8 for portraits anyway. Macro is mostly manual focus and I can't stand the sound anyway :D

I have 3 lenses I am crazy about, including a Canon 70-200 which is a wonderful, wonderful lens that covers the 90 range, obviously. For some reason, though, when I go out I always want to use this one, even when I'm definitely not going to do macro. Anyway, here are a couple from today.

I did the same thing with the canon 55-250: I loved the pictures I took with it so much that I bought the 70-200L. I guess you can't have too much of a good thing! Anyway, I will definitely be back out doing macro, but have to get the "long" lenses out of my system first! Your pictures are wonderful, as usual, BTW. I especially love the color-coordination of your second shot. Your macro photography is oddly stylish. I suspect you dress well, too.

They are just hollow tubes you place between the lens and camera to increase the maximum magnification without optical loss. 64mm on the Tamron 90mm gives you a maximum magnification of around 1.71x. Here's a crappy pic of the setup for the frost image.

The original Tamron 90mm Macro was a f/2.5 in an Adaptall mount, dating back to the early 1980s. In those days, they were the choice for macro shooters.

When I discovered this huge bird (a crested hawk eagle) too close to my vehicle deep inside the forest in Rajasthan, India I realised the bird was closer than the minimum focusing distance of my regular birding lens - a 400 mm 5.6. Out came my Tamron 90 mm and this is the result on a 450D.

Birding with the 90 macro...brilliant :)
lol. I saw this bird with my 400 mm/7D in my hand but I was on the front passenger seat of a Gypsy and could neither rest it on anything nor could I use the tripod. If I stepped out the bird would fly away. So all those shots with the 400 came out blurred. My next option was to try out the other camera. The bird was extremely obliging and gave me all the time in the world. In fact on that other camera I had to first change the lens from a wide angle one to the macro !!! Even my father wouldn't give me so much time to photograph him.
Also, the bird was so close only its head filled the screen on the 400. It's a shame those shots are blurred.
So much for a story and now another non-macro shot with the macro lens. City Palace, Udaipur. Rajasthan from the top of a restaurant.

I got this lens back in the summer and have really been enjoying it.
My only complaint is that when taking non-macro pictures I find the AF to be brutal. The lens seems to hunt back and forth more often than not before it picks up the focus point. And it's usually things I would think would be easy to focus on.
With macro work I always use MF.
