I love mine. I wouldn't trade it for my husband's canon 100mm macro either...I just like the tamron better. (When I use it, I use it for everything from macro to landscape) :)

This thread got me thinking. Should I replace my kit lens (which I think is not that bad if use properly) with Sigma 17-70 or add this lens to my kit. Hmm...I hate dilemmas..especially ones that costs money.

Hi everybody,
Looks like a great fun lens to use and thank you very much for the samples.
Question though, do any of you also use it as a portrait lens? I'm torn between the wonderful 85 1.8 and this lens. I know the 85 is in a league of its own regarding portraiture, but the 90's macro abilities are very tempting.
(This coming from a guy with the kit and the thrifty 50...)
So, any examples using this lens as a portrait lens???
Waiting impatiently...

I'm still in 'research' mode on a new macro lens. It seems the Canon (EF-S) 60, 100 & 180, Tamron 90 and Sigma 150 are well regarded. Here's a comparison article between the Canon 100 & Tamron 90

Hold the press....I've just been looking at the new Sigma 70 macro. Rave reviews on that one plus it just won the TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) Best Expert lens in Europe award http://www.tipa.com/awa_detail_2007.lasso?-Search=Action&-Table=web&-Database=awards_2007&-KeyValue=119
It's also an ideal (105mm equivalent) focal length for a crop camera for portraits. Hmmmm...more research needed.

Most of the macro's in this category all performed really well on peoples tests, most receive the same glowing reviews and anyone that says one is significantly better than another is probably biased. I choose the Tamron for four reasons, 1) It is the only macro that received a 'highly recommended' from Photo Zone, 2) It is always compared to the Canon and considered just as if not a little better sharpness wise, 3) 90mm was the perfect reach for me to do portraits as well as macro's and 4) I got it for a great deal. I really don't think you can go wrong with any of the macros in this class IMO.

I use the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 SP AF Macro. Although this earlier issue lens was not specifically designed for digital; the imagery is awesome. I don't know if the Di model provides better imagery but, it is hard to imagine anything better than what I am getting from my Tammy.
One possible (depending on how you look at lens purchases) downside of the Tamron vs. the Canon is that resale value doesn't appear to be as good for the Tamron as for the Canon 100mm macro.
This might be bad news if you are buying the lens new and good news for a photographer purchasing a used Tamron. I got mine for $125 including shipping. It is the sharest lens in my battery (and I have three L lenses).

Get off the fence and hit the ground running to the store and buy one of these.

I picked up this lens in HK recently but must admit it's not lighting any fires with me (yet). The autofocus is noisy and slow, the build is plasticky and the extending focus is annoying. IQ wise it's very good but not up with the my 17-55 IS or 70-200 f/4L IS - though these are two of Canon's best and cost quite a bit more.
That said I have been using it hand-held and perhaps having IS on my other lenses has made my technique lazy. I will slap it on a tripod and see if things improve. The fantastic images posted here get me thinking I have just not spent enough time on this lens yet.

Figured I would add to this thread - the Tamron 90mm Macro lens is incredibly sharp, has excellent bokeh and generates wonderful colors.
I took these shots at Brookside Gardens (located in Wheaton, MD), with my 40D and Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro Lens:

Tamron Di lenses as the 90mm F/2.8 is are compatable with full frame cameras as opposed to Dii lenses which are designed for cropped bodies..
The SP designation refers to Tamron's high performance series..
Mine is over two years old and is designated SP AF Di 90mm F/2.8 Macro.. New Tamrons are SP lenses also..

I took a couple this Easter weekend at moms... nothing magazine worthy, but I love this lens.
BTW, there are model numbers on the side of the lenses. The newest (in production now) Di version is the 272E, the previous version (non-Di) is 172E, and there is even one below that. All are the same, excellent IQ... the newer Di version has some fancy coatings. I've had both later models (for different camera mounts) and both were phenomenal performers.

So this lens can be used for the 10d up to 50D and also 1D's & the 5D's with no problem at all, I've heard different, because from 10D up to 50D aren't full frame, so you would need the DII Tamron which I don't think is available:oops: if I am wrong.
Please put me straight because as of the other day I bought the 50D and who knows I might own the 1D Mkiii in the next couple of years, and I don't want to be stranded with a lens that I cannot use.

The Tamron SP AF 90mm F/2.8 is a Di lens which can be used on both full frame and crop bodies.. The Tamron SP AF 17-50mm F/2.8 for example is a Dii lens which can only be used on crop bodies..

Really nice lens, I had to return it today though. Long story short, I wanted to extensively test both the Canon 100mm and the Tamron 90mm macro lenses, and they told me I could buy it and return it within 7 days for full cash back.
After loving it today and yesterday, I realized that my local camera shop(Hunt's), usually within 10 bucks of online prices, sold me this lens at $575 when B&H has it for $459 PLUS a $60 mail in rebate, so I could have gotten this for $175 cheaper, add $30 for tax that I don't have to pay online, and that's almost $200 cheaper.
I'm debating whether or not I should find a Canon 100mm macro before I buy it, or go with my instinct and make this one my first non-Canon lens.

The focus speed is very similar in my opinion, maybe a tad slower.
However, the IQ is almost identical, and the Tamron is slightly lighter, thinner- easier to hold. BUT the Tamron has an extending front thing that stretches out whenever you increase magnification while the Canon doesn't.

SP is the designation Tamron gives their topshelf lenses as Canon does with their L lenses..

OK, I can see why you would want to name the thread after the official name of the lens, but it does have its drawbacks:( I literally went to the Lenses section and clicked "start thread" and then this NEW section suddenly appeared like opening a secret panel, and then (so I wouldn't get torn a new one by the "mod of iron", or whatever his handle is) I started going through it page by page and then found this. I'm sure if I'd actually had the box sitting on my desk by the screen I might have thought of it sooner. It seems like a real flaw in the system that you can't find this by typing anything like "Tamron 90mm Macro" into the thread search. EDIT:(whoops! See post top of next page)

Did you use extenders or tubes for those images?
Thanks
RipN'Pix
30th of September 2010 (Thu), 02:05
Hi, Nope, no extension tubes or extenders.
The first 2 images are cropped about 50%
The 3rd Image Cropped about 5% to frame it better
the last shot Cropped about 20%
The lens is very sharp which allows you to crop a fair amount of it. All these are shot @ 1:1 which is what I do 95% of the time with this lens.

I'm completely new to Macro and don't know what the hell I am doing. May I throw out some general questions to anybody who feels like anwering?
For example, when shooting bugs, do you usually use A. a flash of some kind B. Tripod C. What F-stop?
Since you seem to be handy at the moment, RipN'Pix do you mind if I ask you a couple of specific ones? The first two of yours are on a pale green surface. Is that some kind of home studio setup, or an effect of some kind? [edit: Actully, I am looking at this on a crummy old monitor at work. If its just a normal leaf or something, sorry!] Also, it may be an illusion, but the wasp (?) looks almost comatose, more like he is draped over the nest than standing on it. Is there something going on there?
Thanks for the help!

rjx,
No tubes. The 1:1 capability does allow for some very close shots, plus as RipN'Pix mentioned the sharpness is super high and allows for some heavy crops.
Mookalafalas,
A. A Flash is almost always needed (especially for bugs which are in the bushes, and limited amount of light). Also helps "freeze" any hand/motion blur
B. Tripod...very rarely with most shots, the kinds of angles and levels some shots are taken at, it's not viable.
c. F-stop, well depends on the kind of image you want.
E.g. this super thin Dof @ 2.8
http://lh3.ggpht.com/_J3wCjsRO6Tg/TG58lb6DWtI/AAAAAAAANHE/xxOYQzEDyMw/s720/IMG_7226.jpg

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_J3wCjsRO6Tg/TITuQjh4hsI/AAAAAAAANS4/vCxp8eL9mOk/s720/IMG_9357.jpg

One very important tip would be, at 1:1 your f-stop essentially doubles w.r.t. light falling on the sensor, and hence exposure needs to be corrected accordingly

Hayath, thanks a lot. That was helpful, and great shots as usual!
Actually, last night I ordered an inexpensive "flash frame" that connects to the camera and gives more mobility to flash positioning, and I also ordered a cheap flash cable to connect the hot-shoe to the flash. I really want to get a Yongnuo 468, but will end up with the stronger and better made (but not quite as versatile) Nissin di622.
This last part of your help lost me:

What is w.r.t.?

You're welcome anytime!
w.r.t = with respect to
Sorry if that was too much of a short form

Ah, I didn't know that one! Actually, I'm a noob not just regarding photography but forum chatting as well:)
Anyway, I want to see if I have my head around this.

If I set the lens to 1:1, I lose one stop that my camera isn't telling me about? So if it says f11, I should really consider it to be f16 and should, say, set exposure compensation up a stop? Or, since an F-stop number actually represents a fraction, if that doubles I'm getting MORE light and should turn down my ex comp by, say 2/3? It seems I've heard that said before, although I didn't understand it...

Nice! Its not often you get a free stop in photography. I mean, usually you have to pay an arm and a leg for that.
I appreciate your help, Hayath. Too bad it's night time:( i want to get out there and shoot some bugs!
