First time shooting this band and this venue, The Gothic in Englewood, Co was very well lit for my purposes as the bands took the stage. This shot was from the 4th band of the night, Random Hero.

Great colors...i'm glad you didn't use flash... Rene' got me regarding my BG last week...I agreed with him regarding my pic... however here, the reflections of the drums set up, look pretty good to me... It's an individual preference thing... two versions of the photo might be in order, one with more BG blur, and one as is, to satisfy everybody...

I actually find the keyboard player more distracting in pic #2, than I find the drums to be distracting at all in pic. # 1...Go figure...

Very nice pics...a bit small, here and on Flicker, but very nice...

Thanks for the feedback! I try not to post process tooo much, but i may end up editting them when I get to a computer with a mouse, touchpads and touchups aren't so fun, you know?

I think I may have used flash maybe once or twice at shows, it takes away from the feeling of the show.

Yeah, PP is time consuming and it gets pretty personal sometimes... I'd rather just take pics... but the results are amazing on some photos... so, we'll put up with that minor inconvenience for now...

so true, i keep eyeing wacom tablets so I can realllly go after some detail in masking, retouching, etc. haven't yet, one of my friends posts amazing shots... only she sent me her workflow on one, her shots are only truly amazing after quite a bit of photoshopping. I would rather try to take a great shot (to me) than to rely on photoshop to fix everything.

Yeah, regarding image quality pertaining to subject, composition, framing, lighting... I'd much rather take on the task starting right at the top, nice and easy, than to work my way up by way of alternative methods.

RAW is a great back up tool, especially for exposure modification... I find it certainly justifies the expenditure of extra memory, for that extra peace of mind.

very true, I went through 6 GB that night of shooting, all in raw. I can't wait to make the justification to purchase more CF cards and lenses and such to assist me shooting those shots I see in my mind.

the gothic is fun. been years since i've shot there though.

i think you did well with the reds on the first one, but agree with the disctracting background. the second one has great color and is pretty sharp, but i would have zoomed out a bit and moved the frame over to the left.

Yeah, it's a shame that we can't have plain backgrounds behind the performers so our photos don't turn out less distracting! hehe

Hindsight is always a kick in the pants when it comes to seeing what we coulda/woulda/shoulda done for shots. Thanks for the C&C.

I liked shooting the Gothic, for being the first time I had even stepped foot in there, I think I came out with at least a few shots that I am proud of and happy with.

They look good. BGs can be a challenge. Normally I don't have enough light on a drummer/drum set for it to show up well enough to be a distraction. ;)

I'm gussing the reason the BGs seem so prominent is that the zoom kinda pulled them in more and the crops accentuate it. Still nice looking pictures.

I was really pleased, though, with the lighting, I was able to get some good drummer shots.

It's a habit from my old P&S to fill the frame as much as possible with the subject, not thinkng that a 3500px wide shot can be cropped down to fill up the frame for web-use.

The two of them, 1st pic, in post # 15, look pretty good even with the mike in the middle...
2nd pic is surprisingly sharp enough even with that right arm motion blur...

You retained the rich colors nicely...cool pics...

Thanks John, I was surprised with the sharpness in #2 as well, the guitar head is very crisp, yet the arm blur still leaves the motion and action to the shot.
