Four two-page layouts in Heartland Magazine. WOW! Their feature article for the May/June issue is JetSprint Racing. I was contacted about 2 months ago that they wanted to use my photos. They found my photos via my website. They selected from about 20 photos and will be using four. Not sure what they're doing yet for the cover though, but hey, I'm not going to get too picky.
Yeah, I could get used to doing this very easily for a living! Man this is sweet!
I had never heard of Heartland Magazine. They don't have a website. Weird. But, from what I understand they are an outdoor sports magazine, featuring hiking, biking, boats (of course) and general outdoor sports.
Now tell me the 10D isn't good for sports, or isn't high enough res for a two-page spread.
I dare ya!

Nice one Jim. Isn't it a great feeling. I still get the same buzz even today as I did when I first got published. You are allowed to walk around all day with a big grin.
Never mind how good the 10D is, it is 10% camera and 90% photographer.

Very cool Jim. I wish I could see some of my images printed in a magazine. So far I have only been published in newspapers. New print sucks for showing the details in your work.
So, did their sales go up, since you will be buying numerous copies to keep for yourself??

And who said that website wasn't paying for itself, huh Jim? LOL
An idea now would be to get 2 copies of the mag, frame the shots in a big poster size frame with the front cover of the mag and a brass plate with the published info engraved. Sure would look good over the fireplace. Well until your wife said, "Enough is enough, hang that in your den."

I agree with Scott Berger ....
Your photos on your website ARE awesome! Very nicely done!
And - even though I don't know you - congrats on the publication. Personally, I'm a bit surprised that the magazine only wanted 4 of your shots ....
And I would never tell you that the 10D is not good enough for sports .... that's exactly what I use MY 10D for and I love it ....
Again, congrats .... it is sweet ....

Jim,
Can we get autographs??? I recon the first of many might be worth something some day. I'm wondering what you can do with the 1D Mark II? I think it will prove to be a real interesting time. I wish you continued success in the future.
Just a question. I have no doubt regading resolution, but...
Ok, lets see here a regular piece of paper is 8 1/2 inches x 11 inches. So to get a 2 pg spread you would need 8 1/2 inches x 22 inches. It is not a matter of able to do it, I am sure, but I was wondering about the distortion. I am thinking 17 inches x 22 inches is more like it. I was just wondering. This is provided the mag is normal size and not odd size like Shutterbug and a few others out there.

I can't believe all this hoopla! I can take better pictures than that RFMSports dude with one arm tied behind my back and the lens cap on!
and then I woke up...
Jim, I'm absolutely thrilled to hear this news. Good for you. Your action shots are amazing and are a quality I aspire to someday achieve.
Kudos and congradulations to you. I'll be tracking down a copy of that magazine myself. But I'm going to be a name dropper now.. "See these awesome boat shots?? I know that guy! We go waaaaay back." :P
May this be only the beginning of your good and well earned fortune.

Wow! Thank you everyone! I'm humbled...
I'm still in a "is this real" stage and guess it'll be more real when I actually see the mag, which BTW they are sending me 12 free copies.
It's also pretty cool when "they" come to you rather than you pursuing them. I told my Mom last night and she got all weepy. My Dad said, "About ^&*%ing time!" :D
I know several other folks here have been published before and it's nice to become part of that crowd. DeFordPhoto, as a business, will soon officially open it's doors, and associated tax breaks. ;)

That is the best way to sell your work. You know they want it, they know they want it, no bullshirting about the bushes. Each party trying to get their best deal they can, can sometimes ruin the deal.
DeFordPhoto, as a business, will soon officially open it's doors, and associated tax breaks.
Now I know I am going to buy more stock in Malox and Tylenol.

Great job, Jim! That's what web sites are for. I've been published in a lot of smaller publications but it was through my web site that Town and Country Magazine found the picture of our male Bouvier of mine that they wanted to use in one of their issues. I thought it was a hoax at first and put them off. Good thing they were persistant.
I hope you get a lot more requests like this, your work deserves it.
