OK, this was my first time so take that into account. I used my 50 1.4, set on 1.8, AV (as the lights were all over the place) and ISO 3200, PPed in DPP, had to lighten many of the up two full WHOLE numbers (not stops, whole numbers) and then cropped and ran through Neat Image and uploaded to net.

Love 3, 5 and 8. Great job for the first time...lucky that you had such good light. Did you enjoy shooting it?

Had a blast, except they put those small folding tables beside the ringk so you have a place to set things and write (like the judges have) and it keeps me away from the the rink. I have a bruse across my chest from leaning up against that thing for so long....LOL

Ok, here's a quick critique...

First off the colors and exposure are very good, looks like the lighting was tough, so you did very well there...

#1 - Personally I wouldnt run one like this because I cant see either boxer's face...It's very rare to get a telling shot where you can see neither fighter. Timing is good and I might differ my opinion if it was a pro bout because there would be no headgear, so it might work

#2 - Funny...love the jeans...any type of in ring portrait type shot should never have ropes in the foreground though...

#3 - good capture, I would have shot/cropped tighter though...legs rarely mean anything in a boxing photo, except in the case of a knockdown, or a wide shot to capture the "whole of the event"

#6 - HAHA...Ring Boy...I can honestly say I havent seen that before...

#7 - Same as #1, all back, no faces...good timing though

#8 - very good capture, prefer it cropped tighter and horizontal though, but perfect timing...

Not a bad first effort in boxing, it's a pretty tough sport to shoot, and extremely hard to get that "fist on face" killer shot...

thanks for the kind comments....

Do you mostly shoot in "landscape" orientation?

The lighting was horrible. Had to use ISO 3200 and lighten most of them two full "numbers"....LOL

Well done. #8 is the keeper. Next time, get there early, and ask the promoter to remove one table. They usually will, and wouldn't think about it unless you mention it.
I haven't gotten an answer on the picture style from anyone yet. Even spoke to Canon and they couldn't recommend one over the other.
Go to sparring sessions at local gyms and practice.

I will start another thread with more shots, since I have reached my max of 8 on this thread....

I have decided to ask about the tables next time....LOL

What picture style are you refering to? I shoot in RAW and picture styles on the camera do not apply to RAW, I belive?

I usually fillup 2-3 2GB cards, so I just shoot fine JPG. I post my photos that night or the next morning, so I don't have the luxury of shooting RAW.
I thought that you were referring to the landscape style of the 30D.
My error.

Wow, really great shots ' diver. I think that #5 is really super.

How do you avoid getting the ropes in the shots?

Simple, I dont post ths shots with the ropes in them....LOL

Actually I just leaned onto the skirt of the mat and got my camera between the floor and the first rope...
