A card reader that doesn't need softwhere?

Is there a card reader that will run on a Windows XP home system without software?

I'm going to Maine, Pennsylvania, and Georgia this summer (I have relatives in each place) and I only have 256mb of card space. I would like to be able to get a card reader that I can quickly use on relatives computer to burn the photos to CD's.

No Raw conversion or anything...just get them off my card and onto a CD. I'll deal with them later.

Is there such thing as a quick, plug-in-and-go card reader?

Most card readers of recent vintage will work with WindowsXP without any added software. You plug in the reader, Windows XP identies it as new hardware, then tells you it's OK to use it. The card reader package should specify that no add'l software is needed for XP. The included CD should be for non-XP systems.

I've got an old Sandisk SDDR-31 reader.. It's almost three years old.. It works fine in Windows XP home edition and in Linux with no special software or drivers..

Win98se does need extra 'stuff' installed..

Yep - they just plug into your USB port, and you can drag files to or from just like any other drive on your PC (or Mac).

I have several Sandisk Imagemates. They plug into a USB port and require no software to run. I am running windows XP pro on my machines.

I think I paid around 25 bucks a piece for them.

SanDisk ImageMate CF (i.e. single slot for CF's only) works fine on XP Home (and Pro for that matter). No need to install software and is well behaved in that inserting and removing CF cards doesn't cause any problems.

Un plugging the unit itself from the USB port means it just disappears, no drama, no uninstalling needed.
