I have had this D30 for three months...and I haven't even made a print yet!

Im going to compile a set of 10 photos and send them to different local printers along with a few on-line places to see who is best.

What should I look for?

Im going to send some sort of bright colored things like flowers to check color quality. Some portraits for skin tones...what else?

Also, I have been reading a lot of recent articles on screen calibration. How necessary is it? Would it work if I just took a shot straight off the camera, had it printed, and then adjusted my screen so that the file on my screen looked close to the print? I really dont have a spare $150 for one of those doo-hickies that goes on the screen.

Get some pics printed and THEN decide if you need the opticalthings.Alot of people print with zero adjustments to anything(even the image!) and are still happy :)

OK,time for confession........................
I've owned a 300D for 3 1/2 months, taken over 3000 pics, done a wedding and have only ever printed two pictures (and they were demo ones to show the bride DOF effects)
