I want to purchase a 220ex for my G3 because the 420ex is too heavy/bulky for me to handle. I see a lot of omni-bounce attachments for the 420ex and other flashes IF they are pointed straight up. Is there an attachment to angle the 220ex up to bounce it off the ceiling? I've searched but cannot find anything. Is it even possible to bounce the 220ex at an angle (60, 75, 80, 90 degrees) and achieve good results?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Paladin, I dont think this flash will work for what you intend to use it for. The head on the 220 EX does not tilt or swivel, therefore ceiling bouce would be out of the question, even if this flash had enough gain.
Here's a link to this flash on Canons site; http://www.usa.canon.com/html/cameras_speedlite/220ex.html

Bruce,

I know the 220ex will work with the G3. I just don't know if it has the power to be bounced up and off the ceiling. Maybe someone has tried or knows? Thanks tho.

It can't be bounced off anything as it doesn't tilt or swivel.

220ex is not going to be really different from in-camera flash. i heard it was designed for cameras without any flash. get 420ex, it's that bulky and has bounce positions.

and, by the way, the stofen omni-bounce is overpriced and does not make much difference, imho. i have one and i use it less and less.

Thanks for all the input. Guess I'll just have to put it on a stick and hold it against the ceiling ... yeah, right ... :D Thanks again.

You could purchase the off-camera hot shoe cord and just hold the flash and bounce it where ever you wanted to.

4walls, my problem is that I am a qaudriplegic and don't have finger motor; consequently, it takes one hand to hold the G3 and the other to push the shutter release, turn the controls, etc. This is why I do not think I can handle the much heavier, bulkier and top-heavy 420EX. It's also why I was hoping I could find something similar to the sto-fen omni-bounce that would work with the 220EX. I was/am fully aware the 220EX does not tilt or swivel and was wondering if the 220EX was powerfil enough to handle some type of reflector to bounce the flash upward and off the ceiling. The 420EX is pointed straight up and used with the sto-fen omni-bounce. I didn't think there would be that much difference in using a similar system to bounce the forward pointing 220EX at an upward angle to the ceiling. To me it seems to be the same principal. Evidently I am mistaken or no one has tried. So, I thought I would ask. :) And I thank everyone for their thoughts. Maybe there is a lightweight alternative with tilt & swivel to the 420EX that will work with the G3? Anyway, thanks again for suggestions, advice and smiles.

Paladin, I have a better understanding of what you're trying to do now, and I think that if you bounced the light upward via a reflector, it might just work. My only question at this point is whether or not the 220 has enough gain, and with a guide # of 72 ft/22 meters @ ISO 100, it just might work as long as the ceiling isn't so high that it puts it out of range, but for the most part, I think it'll work. Sorry for the missunderstanding. :D

OK, how about this... I used a coat hangar with my 200E (which only fires at full power on the G3).

Bruce & 4walls

Bruce,

Thanks for your thoughts/knowledge. I wouldn't use the flash on any ceiling over 8' so it should work OK. Thanks again and it's more my fault for not explaining myself better. :)

4walls,

Cool. thanks for the pixs and the idea of how to create a reflecter/diffuser. I appreciate the help.

I think it will probably work fine then. Do some trial and error work while checking different angles of the reflector for optimum use.
Good luck to you, and let us know how it works for you. :D :D :D

You might be better off with a cheaper Vivitar bounce flash. I don't know about compatibility with the G series cameras though.
