Yeah!
My new baby arrived!

Can't wait to shoot some concerts!
The best part was that I ordered from B&H in the states via air mail, and it arrived 3 days later with NO taxes owing. There should have been atleast GST. Nice!
This is a nice looking lens too. I think it looks even better than my white 70-200mm F4L. It also fits more snugly to my 300d than the 70-200 which has a bit of play. But that could be because when that lens is attached I hold the kit by the lens instead of the actual camera ;)

Glad to see you got the lens hood with it. You're gonna like this lens. Go on, ask how I know? :D

DUDE! That's freaking me out! I just got the exact same lens today! I must admit I was a little surprised at how "zoomed in" it is. I bought it thinking it would be a good portrait lens, and it may well be. But I think I'm going to have to back up quite a bit to get an entire family in the shot.
Let me know how your pics. turn out. I've already taken several of the dog and the wife and just about everything else laying around the house. Probably nothing worth posting.

Hey Bruce, how do you know???
I got then lens hood, too. Not really sure when to use it; all the time? I bought a uv haze filter, too. Not sure when to use it, either!

Burkdog, that is funny!
You know, over the past couple of weeks I've had questions I was going to post, and when I got to the forum, somebody else had JUST asked the exact same question. Weird!
So this time I posted anyway, and low and behold, you just posted about receiving the same lens! haha
The picture of the boxes is the only one I've taken. hehe. But, in photoshop it is super sharp :)
I did have to stand across the room just to get the boxes to fit in the pic, but that is what I want for concerts. More zoom than my 50mm f1.8, and a faster lens than the 70-200 f4.
I am really turning into a lover of prime lenses. They are relatively affordable and super sharp. Generally I know what lens I am going to need before I go to an event. I put away my kit lens because I may never use it (except for wide angles which I dont shoot often).
Burkdog, it IS the weekend. Get out and take some pictures, and I will meet you back here tomorrow or sunday. :)

All the time would be a very good idea. Most people in the know will leave a UV filter on their lens for protection. Much cheaper to replace the filter than the lens if it gets banged.
Keeping the lens hood on all the time will keep stray light from entering the lens at odd angles that might cause flare. Also it will help produce a more contrasty shot outdoors.
As for how I know? You get three guesses, and the first two dont count.
Enjoy. :D

I never used to think lens hoods mattered when I had my G3, but now I always use them and it really does make a difference. Not to mention I dont use UV filters for protection, so the hood is nice.
Question: when I was looking at this lens, and others, at B&H, they have a canon have uv-1 filter as an accessory, I assume as lens protection. However, dont haze filters have a slight tint as opposed to a pure uv filter which is neutral?

Ballen, do you use an UV filter on your 85mm?
Does having a uv filter help seal the lens and prevent dust from getting into the front element? I think I read that somewhere

It states that in the EF 17-40L manual. Whether that is the case for all lenses I don't know. I suspect not and that it will depend on the design of the individual lens.

Thanks cadwell.
That is exactly the lens i read about.
I've heard that the 100mm f2 has a tendency to collect alot of dust inside. I guess it couldnt hurt.

Yikes! You Busted me. I dont have a UV filter on the 85mm yet, but will. As far as sealing the front element, it will keep dirt and grime off of it, meaning you wont have to worry about getting cleaning swirl marks on the element, so, in THAT respect, YES.

I have the 85mm 1.8, and I love it. As you said, for concerts it can be a great lens - compact, yet fast.
I put a filter on every lens. My suggestion is to use the same type (UV or Skylight) on each lens.
Primes are really fine in low-light situations like a concert or theater. You may have to decide what focal length to use, but the extra stop or more can't be beat!
OBTW, the 85 now has a rebate if you got the USA version. It started April 1, so if your invoice shows April 1 or later, you get a bonus. B&H has the PDF with all the info and the form to fill out.
Have Fun

Off to order my 100mm f2 - it has a rebate, too.
