Opinions??

My son and his SO are expecting. I want to get them a digital camera, would like one with large display so you can see what you are getting, and simple operation. (my son is not into photography). Probably $400 max is what I want to spend. Any opinions appreciated. I guess this is the right place to post this question.

I'm sure many cameras will work for the needs you described, but if I were in your position I'd definitely take a look at the new A570 IS (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=14905). BIG screen, image stabilization, plenty of pixels, DIGIC III processor and a price under $300.

It could be. It's also a creek way out in the mountains of Idaho I have very fond memories of.

SD700IS is excellent camera, about $325 in B&H.

I just bought a Canon A710IS and am impressed with the photo quality. Lg display, pretty simple operation. Well under $300.

SD700IS is an amazing little camera. Excellent picture quality and a big screen. It would be a good choice.
