I thought this was a thread about what lens to bring. A big fast white one or a smaller, slower one.

IMO, a big fast lens would be sorta showing disrespect - looks like you're there for a photo shoot more than anything else. On the other hand, both black and white are mourning colors... maybe just bring that 35L you received.

to bad you wont have the 35L. funeral homes have terrible light, that 1.4 would come in handy.

the stiff isn't going to care what day the funeral is, ya know?
I'd ask the family to move it...something like "chop, chop! let's get 'im in the ground...priorities people!"
this is really a messed up thread. :-?

You could use IS because the subject isn't moving. An additional three stops.... cool!

Who says you have to go? If he/she was a good friend, they'd understand. If they weren't good friends, no need to go. ;)
Anyway, sorry for your loss (the death, not the delay in getting your hands on your new lens.) A 35L though, not one to hold your breath to play with, not like getting a 500mmL or something really different than the usual.

PS. Death doesn't always have to be a sad affair. When I die, I hope I hear people cracking jokes on my behalf.

Oh man!!... there is some really morbid humor here. I do not know if I can support that. If it is someone you remotely cared about, go.
Hey, you may want to ask around if the deceased owned some Camera Equipment they'd like to be rid of in this time of need.
I feel so bad participating in this. I really do.

If he took the long white lens he could stand back away from everyone else and no-one would notices the tears.

I was thinking, ....maybe a macro, you know, get some good close ups. Then, that is distasteful.
Bring a wide angle and get some group shots around the casket.
(at least I'll have a few POTN friends in hell!)

Now I am known in my family/friends circle to be the guy who usually brings his camera along to any kind of occasion.
However, even I would refrain from bringing my camera to a funeral (regardless of lens colour) unless I was the photographer paid to record it.
Apart from the very likely possibility that others might see it as a sign of disrespect if you start snapping pictures (rather not use flash, BTW) instead of pursuing the more traditional forms of mourning, it maybe would maybe not be one of those occasions you and other people want to fondly remember.
Best regards,
Andy

Depends on the captions you use :p
Maybe your deceased friends' myspace would be more appropriate, kind of 'wrapping it up'...

Morbid? Possibly. Funny? Positively.
We have to joke about death, it's one of the things we all have in common (well, except for lens envy).

Exactly Joan, we have to confront things that frighten us and the best way is by joking around, in a sensitive way. By sensitive i mean Im going to make nice crops and use the unsharp mask instead of just sharpening edges to make the bodies look good before i upload the pics to my myspace :D

You could maybe shoot the funeral - bit like a wedding in a way - except the deceased is being released instead of sentenced!

You guys are joking around, but I actually met a "funeral" photography years ago. One thing I remember he said was no shots from the foot of the coffin because it made the nose holes too big. The family didn't like those shots. Of course, he was a pretty strange person, anyway.

'Still' yes, 'Life' might be a bit unfitting

Although this post is an absolutely serious contribution to the issue and absoultely fitting for a photography forum, it made me laugh out loud.
Good advice I'll try to remember should I ever come to the situation...

You know, you guys are absolutely sick.
We are talking about a funeral here. Someone passed away.
To make a joke out of it is just wrong.
Really...
Hey, have UPS forward your package to the funeral home. This way you can attend the funeral and get the lens. Everybody wins...well, except you know who...
;);););)
p.s. This is just wrong!@#$

Well, maybe shooting some funerals would be a good way for a newbie wedding photographer to learn the ropes without the fast-paced atmosphere and the pressure
It might also be a less competitive situation than if you just turn up at someone else's wedding with your gear and start shooting ... the chances that there is already another pro who'll have you kicked out are slimmer...

Andy

who takes pictures at a funeral anyway?..............disrespectful:p
Andy_T
16th of March 2007 (Fri), 03:24
I'd say that depends a bit on how you do it ...
Camo or beige photography vest, large white lenses ... no no
Black photography vest, decent black L primes ... stylish and appropriate
And maybe you don't say 'Everybody say CHEESE' but 'Everybody GRIEVE', but that really is speculation
Best regards,
Andy

well...........i couldn't ever foresee a time you'd sit down and look through an album filled with pics from a funeral. i mean, woudn't it be beter to remenise over pics of the person alive and living?
