View Full Version : Frozen Niagara Falls

Here is a shot taken three weeks ago. It was very cold in Niagara Falls for a good 6 weeks straight, allowing a large portion of the American Falls to freeze over, which I have never seen before. I had taken a few days worth of views, trying to get a great shot. Due to the ice buildup at the base and the cold, windy weather, the mist usually made a haziness at the brink, making it hard to get a clear shot.

Also, the shot was taken the day after a heavy rain fell, which produced the smooth ice on top. The very next day it snowed and the smooth ice disappeared underneath. The frozen section of the falls is totally gone now, due to rain and warmer temperatures over the last ten days. She is again flowing freely.

The next two shots were taken one week prior to the first image.

Great shots! I especially like the last one.

It's really amazing when you think about the power behind the river and under the ice.

Very nice. I was up there in the beginning of December (my company is based out of Niagara). I can't wait to come up during the spring.

Those are awesome. I really like the second and third ones because they show how big the falls are.

Thanks for the great comments, all.

I've lived in NIagara Falls all my life and am fortunate to see it on a daily basis, due to work, and never tire of it. This is the first time I have ever seen a portion freeze over like this, and the frozen section was huge. It is hard to be accurate, but I'd guess the section was 150 feet wide by 200 yards up-river, and then frozen over the edge to the rocks below. In a couple sections under the frozen ice you could see misty droplets falling. Pretty awesome to see.

Thanks again.

Very interesting series. I'm amazed at how cold that place must get for such a powerful waterfall to freeze.

Cool, to say the least. I really like the smoothness of the first one. I really want to visit the falls in the winter. It's funny the stairway in photo # 2 has no one on it. When I visited it was jammed packed with people.
Nice Photos! Keep shootin'

When I lived in Lockport NY, I used to go for lunch a couple times a week to the falls. (a few minutes drive though). In the winter, it is amazing to see the chunks of ice falling along with the river. Saying it was cold is an incredible understatement though.

Nice photographs, thanks for sharing.

Mother nature sure knows how to put on a show and you have captured it perfectly. Thanks for posting your beautiful work.

And, like many others I have visited the falls. Also spent two weeks working in Niagara Falls back in the 70's. Was there when the American side was shut down (no water flow).

Have had dinner many times at the Skylon tower in Canada with a view of the colored lights at night.

Again, Thanks for the pictures.

WOW! These are great shots!

Only thing better would be to have some crazy ice-climbers climbing them. :)

Wonderful work and great planning to capture these.
