as the title states, i got offered by a buddy of mine who has an extra 30D body. he wants to trade his 30D body with around 9k actuations and a 70-200 f/4 + cash for my new and barely used 70-200 2.8L IS.
i've barely used my 70-200 2.8L IS. i've been wanting this lens for so long but a new body would be nice. i could sure use the 5fps since i shoot a lot of action. if i trade, i will be back to the f/4 which i just sold to get the 2.8 IS and i really need the 2.8.
what would you do?

Used 30D goes for about $900-950. Although one sold here the other day for like $750. Used 70-200 f/4 goes for about $450-475 used.
If you really need the 2.8 then I think you just answered your own question.
If it were me, I probably wouldnt downgrade my glass, unless I really really really needed a new camera body.

take the 30D w/ cash. and then use your money to buy a good copy of the 7-2EX.

IS is not neccessary if you are shooting action. I would make the trade and purchase a 200L-2.8.
I'd keep the Rebel as a backup.

Eh, I'd keep the glass. The 30D is not really an action camera IMHO

I purchased a 30D a few months back. The 5 fps are really not that big of deal. The initial timing of the shot makes the difference. The shutter lag on the 30D is less but not by much. However I think it made the most difference in the sports shooting I have done. That being said your 2.8 glass will hold its value much longer than the 30D. If you are getting acceptable images from your XT hang on for a while. The 30D is only going to get cheaper. I'm enjoying that old F4.

It's faster than the Rebel and handles high iso's better. I fail to see why that makes it less appealing for action/sports.
That said, I'd still turn down the offer unless there were talk of serious money exchange. Keep the glass (IMO).

I'd do it!
BUT first need to know how much LOOT he's forking over.
You're upgrading your camera but you loose in the lens.
But you don't use the lens much anyway!
Do it!
Now you have a back-up camera.

Yeah, if it's around $300, go for it, but otherwise, keep the glass.

UPDATE:
i decided against doing it. we tried to negotiate and he is willing to give me $150 max.
since i really want a 30D, i figured it would be cheaper to buy a 30D body than to buy a new 70-200 2.8L IS. i don't want the f4. anything in low light and i have to put it away. thats why i sold it. i also got a real sharp copy. he ordered one before and had to send it back for a refund for focusing issues and softness. then he bought the 30D body & 70-200 f4 combo instead with his refund.
so for now, no 30D for me. 5fps and better ISO will have to wait.

You did a right decision, if i were in your place then i will not give up my lens, all say that body goes and glass is last, so keep your glass and bodies will go down in price so fast like fire spreading.

$150? I thought you said this was a friend. J/K...kinda.
I think that your original comments about needing the 2.8 were the most telling. I I think it would have taken more than just a fair offer for me to do this deal in your situation.
I believe you'll be happier in the long run.

You're going to need to buy a 2.8 anyways.. just stay with it.
Besides, you dont know how the market is going to change. The 5D MII might hit the shelf later this year, making the 5D more obtainable.

If is is a sharp copy, do NOT trade the glass.

I'm guessing that since the post is over a year old that the deal has long since been done;)
