Okay, I'm not usually this stupid, but can someone tell me how to put a link to my gear in the signature line?
A lot of people have a seperate page with their gear listed, and I would like to do the same Makes a cleaner signature.
Thanks for the help.

Ah, so now this brings up the question, where do I host that page? Gotta have my own website with space for this, correct?

You can post you gear here: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=138747
Then get the link to the specific post by right click on the post number on the right side of the post. Number is preceeded with a #

I have never understood a "Gear List". When I post a shot, I caption the shot with the camera, lens, focal length, shutter speed, aperture and ISO. That way anyone critiquing the shot knows what I used. An example would be:
5d
Canon 28-135 (90mm)
1/250th
f/10
ISO 400
This type of information has been used as long as I have been reading photography magazines, in other words, since about 1970 - an I am sure the same general format for decades before that.
Now if someone posts a shot, without any technique information, but their sig states:
Canon 5d, Canon 30D, Canon EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS, Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, Canon EF 50mm f/1.4, Canon 24-70 f/2.8 L
I still have very little idea what the shooter used in the shot.
Therefor, it seems to me a Gear List is pointless in communicating what was used for a particular shot. At best, I am guessing what it might be - and even then, there is still no technique. If there is another point to a gear list (other than the obvious shallow bragging), I would be interested in knowing, because it has always eluded me.

That has been debated so many times.
When someone ask a question how to do this or that then it can be very usefull to know what equipment the person have so the answer can be more specific rather than a generic answer.
If you don't want to see gear lists then you can turn of display of signatures completely then you don't have to look at it.

Got it. Never thought of it from that end.
Hmm, then it might be helpful to have Editing Software/Version listed as well. No point in writing a tutorial on blending modes and layers as an answer if the asker is using Picasa.
Thanks,

In the "gear list thread" that people link to, some are in fact listing Software as well, and platform etc..
Hmmm.. I might go edit mine too :)

Tommy, et al,
Thanks for the tips.
I find it helpful to know what gear someone owns when they ask a question about what device (lens, body, whatever) to use, then you can suggest something they already own, or suggest that what they have is inappropriate for or unable to do the task at hand.
Besides, it also lets people know what fools we are to spend so much money on this stuff!;)

The way I see things, gear list is mostly used to promote gear snobbery..
That’s why I removed it from my signature.

I'm one that likes the gear list. Snobbery aside, I don't get as many "what equipment did you use for that shot?" questions.
