I got rewarded by dad with about $544 and i got $135 somewhere else[i sold my sigma lens with about $270 and i got half of the price last month and the rest this month], advise me what to get next.

I can increase that to a budget $xxxx, but i don't want to be in rush, so give me advises or recommendations and i will discuss about that.

I posted here as i think i should do with glasses and accessories, not the time for bodies now.

He does have a wife, and a couple of kids (boy & girl I think). In Arabic countries, it's not polite, or accepted, that you show pictures of your wife. Kids are fine, but the wife is a no no.

Secondly, she says nothing, and he does what he wants. Ideal, isn't it? And he's more of a collector, than a photographer. It's what feeds his appetite.

With 700...I dunno...buy something nice for the family...or your home. What's the point of collecting, and not using. :(

Got it! I used to waste my time playing World of Warcraft until my wife complained that it was not a hobby... so I picked up photography. You should see her face when I ordered my first L lens (24-105)... not a hint of upsetness. Hey all,

Thank you for all replies, I love you all here:o;)

ok, i have to clarify more details.

I have to neglect some of what on my wishlist, long primes or new sigma and new bodies are out., so what i will incluse here are the following:

Lenses:
- 14L
- 15 fisheye
- 24L
- 24L TS-E
- 35L
- 50L
- 85L II

Accessories:
- New CF cards
- New flash
- Q instruments: Turbo charger or power for the flash
- Studio Lightings
- Decent Tripod

I wrote my thread title with $700 because i can spend this money in this month on anything it worth that price, if you telling me to increase it then i have to wait next month and i can increase it to about $1000-2000, i try not go over $2000 or keep at maximum $1500.
I can save and don't buy anything now or next month, but all above i can get then in budget within %700-2000 wether this month[$700] or next month [up to $2000], so what do you think i should go for or save for? and if you want me to save more and more for few months later so then what should i think to save for in few months later coming?[that will include the long primes or any new bodies or whatever new coming out in few months coming or this year].

about saving for holiday, my holiday will be in August or November, and i am planning to save for that time for sure so i am not worry till that time.

About lenses i mentioned above i have these notes:

-14L not so popular but it will be DAMN wide on any FF or my 1.3x crop.

-24L it is the wide enough on FF but i don't feel it is enough super wide, and i am not sure if this lens is popular but i can't see it is.

-35L this lens is tempting me alot and i see it is one popular prime lens here, so i feel i want it but i have to know for what i should use it before i get it.

-24L TS-E this lens is one of the most preferable as tilt&shift, but i don't have many many architectures shots but sure i love to take photos or architects and buildings and so, so i think this lens should be in my list sooner or later but i like to discuss about this lens more and hope to see many real usage shots of this lens.

-50L this lens is new and I like the f-stop and people here do thier EVIL best efforts to make others to buy this lens no way, but as long i have that focal length covered so then i will not add more to buy third prime same FL of the previous, so i should add another FL that is not covered by any prime from my collection.

- 85L II this lens is so great for portraits on FF as i found in many forums, but i don't don't that much studio portraits or weddings so that i need this lens must, and i covered this FL with my 85 1.8 even both are different in features, but i don't want to buy same FL now, i should look at different FL for different subjects shooting with primes if i want primes.

i don't want to talk about accessories as i need them all or most of them anyway, now or later.

I know this lens will be great on all my bodies but i have to know first in what most subjects i should use this lens for mostly.
you know there are primes use for sports, others for wildlife, another for portraits and so, in your opinion, what you will use 35L for if you got all what i got already?

No one seems to have stated the obvious... what do you want to photograph that you don't already have the gear to cover? It seems that you have money burning a whole in your pocket and want to buy what people think is the coolest lens... regardless if you have a use for it or not?

you are right, and that because i shoot or do photography everything.
When i shoot a landscape with kit lens then many people will till me get 16-35 or 17-40, if i shoot birds with 100-400 then many will say that the best is 600 and somethines 600 is not enough reach if i can't play with distances to be close to the birds, macro can be done with 50 or 100 but maybe others will say get 180 for more work distance.
So what i want to say is that i will never limit myself on any lens, and you all know that you need at least 4 lenses to shoot everything that if you keep one type of lenses[zooms], but if you go to primes then how many primes you need to shoot from the widest to longest subjects.
I have many lenses but all the time when i use a lens in a type of photography then i found that this lens is not the best there, and i want to buy the best top of anything from beginning but as i can't afford the best so fast so then i don't wait to afford a long prime and i go for a zoom first to find what FL is better for me and the IQ and so.
Many sports shooters using 300, 400, 600 lenses in sports, so why don't they use 100-400 with or without TC to got all those reaches, and if 100-400 is not the best choice for most sports then it is the best zoom for wildlife, but also in wildlife and birding many got 500 or 600, so how can i use few lenses when many here using many lenses and they replace all the time with better versions.
About spending money or burning as you said it is easy for me to burn $100K on a car that i will never use it for more than go from one place to another when another car costs $20k can do the job, just because that expensive car is so Luxury or sport #1, many people spent millions in what they like whatever that things are worth or not.

It's all relative. It's wasteful to me and you but you've got to realize the income he has. Look at the join date and amount of gear accumulated in that time. That surpasses my annual salary. He's simply got more money to spend.

i will buy a new Computer [Laptop] for sure, I forgot to add this above for discussion.

I am done long time already and i am so happy, just i feel i want to get more gear thats all, i collect gear because i love to collect, and i have all lenses for what i want to shoot, for example i didn't have 300 or 400 for sports and many said that i have everything, still i don't have 600 which can be used in many things mostly birds and some long far distances sports such as surfing, so i don't know how people say that i have everything.

OK, good point... you can't have the perfect lens for every situation unless you own all the lenses ever made.

To your sports example, I WANT to get a 300 2.8 IS. I already have a 200 1.8 and 400 2.8. The 200 1.8 is darn close to the 300 when used with a TC1.4. So, thus far I've passed on buying it. The 400 2.8 IS is lighter and has IS, but I don't really need either of those things and it cost more... so I have kept the one I have. My point is that I could buy a 300 2.8 IS and 400 2.8 IS, but I don't really need either one at this point. If I came into a windfall, I might do the swap. So, I see your point.

But... there are some things that I would like to be able to do that I can't. I would always start from that point of view. When you've been taking pictures, what do you come away wishing was different about them? Better bokeh, less noise, better color, etc... If I bought a 400 IS, then I would be solving the problem that "I wish this thing weighed less" that I feel after using it for a whole day of shooting. If a 100-400L had the same low light capability, speed of AF, and bokeh... that the 70-200 2.8, 300 2.8, and 400 2.8 gave you combined... then I would own one of those instead of the alternative. Its lighter and cheaper. If I had a 100-400, I'd be saying I wish it could go to f/2.8 because I need to shoot at that a lot.

Think about what you come away from a photo opportunity wishing you had.

And thats why i did with zooms first, now i found what primes i want to get for more bokeh or sharpness or IQ or color or whatever, see that i don't have more than 10 Canon zooms [forget Sigma as they are from the past], but see how many primes i have? I saw members here got at least 10 primes.
I am looking for to get 400 f2.8L so crazy, but someone from UK told me that i should get 300 f2.8 for sports and 600 for birds, 400 and 500 can be great but not so necesary when those two can do perfect and he is right, so my next long prime will be definitely is 600 but not this year.
And i forgot to tell you that i never buy used equipment whatever its conditons, so i don't want to miss something that canon will discontinue to produce in the future, 200 f1.8 was considered one of the best lens out there but where you can find NEW fresh now, all are used but NEW-Like maybe.

So my wrong Philosophy is: Buy NOW, Learn LATER. you have time to learn anyway.

I think this is causing this thread to digress, but I'll assume you are OK with ANY discussion of how you might spend your money... now, or in the future.

First, the 400 f/2.8. You said you were told that the 300 f/2.8 is a better sports lens. I think that largely depends on what sport. If its field sports... soccer, football, lacross, rugby, baseball... well then the 400 f/2.8 is the premier sports lens. I often use a TC1.4 on it to get more reach. If the sport is something closer... softball, baseball, basketball (in larger venues like arenas), then the 300 f/2.8 is better. Probably 75% of my images are all sports and I don't own a 300 f/2.8 at this point. I do own a 120-300 f/2.8 Sigma but don't use it that often, opting for the 200 or 400 instead.

Second, the 200 f/1.8. You are the only one that can decide the new vs. used thing, but you are missing out on my favorite lens by far, and what many regard as one of the best lenses ever had. This lens goes where no other lens can go.... period. The copy I bought was so close to new that you'd be hard pressed to find any flaws. There are plenty available like that still. Once you take it out of the box it isn't new anymore anyways, so I don't see the rationale in a "new only" philosophy... especially if it prevents you from owning the "best", and the 200 1.8 is definitely in the category of the "best".

And thats why i did with zooms first, now i found what primes i want to get for more bokeh or sharpness or IQ or color or whatever, see that i don't have more than 10 Canon zooms [forget Sigma as they are from the past], but see how many primes i have? I saw members here got at least 10 primes.

Once you take it out of the box it isn't new anymore anyways, so I don't see the rationale in a "new only" philosophy... especially if it prevents you from owning the "best", and the 200 1.8 is definitely in the category of the "best".

Now i will think to get lenses that are i like to get wether they are worth or not.
About 400 f2.8L in fact i bought 300 f2.8L for sports and i went to sport club in my city to shoot soccer or football but seems the field itself was smaller to this lens and i couldn't get most shot due to very close, even one photographer there who were working to the newspaper for years and he is working in our government now told me that 300 f2.8L is too long in this club field, so no sense to get 400 then, tomorrow it will be a soccer match in another club field, and there some photographers told me before that 300 f2.8L is enough perfect and no need for 400 as it will be so long even we can use it, so i buy depends on the conditions and reach of subjects i shoot in my area wherever, anyway even if i will get 400 f2.8L for sure i will force myself to use it in some sports wether i like that sport to shoot or not.

I don't think I can be of any help to you. I just don't think this way. I try to buy the tools I need to capture what I'm interested in photographing, or what my business needs to grow. I can't imagine buying a $x,xxx lens and then photographing stuff with it just to use the lens, even if I had no interest in what I was photographing. I'll let the other folks try to help you decide how to spend your money. The great thing about forums is that there are many viewpoints so I'm sure you'll get lots of good input.

The problem may be location oriented... in the US, Soccer and Football are the domain of the 400 f/2.8 on one body, and a shorter lens like the 70-200 on a second body. That's actually the way I do it. If you use a 300 f/2.8 you'll get a shorter area of coverage, but still be able to shoot something. Probably if you guys have Cricket, I'd guess that the 300 would be good for that.... but not shot it. I've not done any tennis, but I am pretty sure you can cover the whole area with a 200 or 300. It depends on access too... shooting from stands or sidelines. The only one of these I can talk to intelligently is Soccer and Football and the 400 works best for them in the US.

100-400 for wildlife and birds.

I am not one of those people with lots of money. In fact, I don't even own a house...I have to rent. I don't like tall buildings either, and hate living in apartments.

To me, I could care less where people spend the money made from Oil. The world needs it, so, it's a commodity. Imagine people didn't need so much oil? Then, the economy would be driven by other things, and the world would be a cleaner place.

Regardless, this is OT at this point...

As for the $700...there's lots of options...and I am sure there will always be more. Be happy with what you buy...and that's all I can recommend. Whether you use it or not, that's up to you, and is your choice at your discretion.

Me, I buy what I want to as well...just in moderation. All this gear can get heavy to carry around, on vacation, and just general shooting. So, I think twice.

there are lenses we know what they are for even we can use for something else, for example macro lenses we can't use in sports unless someone can use it for some reasons.

Now 35L is a wide lens on FF, so it is not so preferable for portraits unless i do full body portraits, but then my 24-70 or 24-105 or even 16-35 can do the job.
But i know that primes are something tasty can't beaten.
Anyway, i use all my lenses one day to another with all bodies except XT, so i don't have problems where and when i can use my lenses anyway, but i love to collect more and more as desire addiction.

I used to follow some motorcycle web forums. People there blow ridiculous sums of money customizing their bikes, they spend more than most cars after all is said and done. I found it quite sad that they would 'waste' so much money essentially 'peacocking'. One poster summed up a lot of my feelings towards that kind of thing in responding to the 1000th time someone new to the boards asked 'What bike should I ride?' He said simply 'It doesnt matter what bike you buy/ride', what matters is what bike _I_ ride.' In other words, if it makes you happy, if it scratches that itch you have, then go nuts and enjoy.

You collect lenses like some of us collect CDs, so some jealousy is to be expected of course. I'm sure there are folks who would look at my meager collection of DVDs and say 'what a waste'. So it's all relative. I dont like showing off simply for the sake of showing off or keeping up with the joneses or whatever, but some people have that drive and often more money than good sense, and it isnt really hurting me so good on them.

Whatever makes you happy, man. The only difference that I can see is that while lenses are cool... I can't imagine myself collecting them for the sake of collecting. Especially when you're just buying everything in the Canon lineup. Now if you were searching for the 50 f/1.0 or the 200 f/1.8 just to "collect" them, that I could probably get. Buying them up like someone buys up a new coin each month or baseball cards... is odd. On the otherhand, you can actually do something with those lenses you are collecting, if you so chose! That's more than I can say for a stamp collector!

More power to ya, Tareq!

i hope this doesn't start a heated debate but i want to post my feelings for some reason. i have no problem whats so ever with you buying so many gears, it is your money and your life. however, i think that doing so much to try and get attention and then complaining that people are jealous of you or that you catch to much grief is just absurd. the only difference between you and Belmondo, CDS, Neil, SSIM is that they have just as much gear but they don't go around making sure that everybody knows what the have or how much money they spend.

i am going to give you the same advice i gave Ron about a month ago that seem to have helped:

if you don't want the attention, simply do your own thing without letting everybody know what you do.

i hope this doesn't start a heated debate but i want to post my feelings for some reason. i have no problem whats so ever with you buying so many gears, it is your money and your life. however, i think that doing so much to try and get attention and then complaining that people are jealous of you or that you catch to much grief is just absurd. the only difference between you and Belmondo, CDS, Neil, SSIM is that they have just as much gear but they don't go around making sure that everybody knows what the have or how much money they spend.

i am going to give you the same advice i gave Ron about a month ago that seem to have helped:

if you don't want the attention, simply do your own thing without letting everybody know what you do.

Thank you.

Today i told someone [POTNer] that soon i will delete my sig and i will not tell anyone what i will get or nobody will know what i've got now or later so then i will never keep to reply on people comment on my gear and i will not be as a showoff guy here as well, it is enough to see many collectors changing thier sig many times by adding or reducing thier lists and all can see it anyway.

Thank you again.

Good luck.

even i spend $3000 to go to many places and take many photos, i have thousands of photos on my 2 pc's and i didn't see that i should show, all photos are nice to me and i love them but for you they are just good not perfect, so doesn't matter if i keep shooting everyday, i love to shoot anyway anytime i want.

You've got some cool lenses. I wouldn't mind seeing some pictures that are "just good" only to see your results from your lens collecton. I see you've only posted one picture in the alphabet thread that you created. Let's see some more from you. Besides, we're all here to get better. there's nothing wrong with a "just good" shot if you tried your best to capture it.
