View Full Version : Flora Macro - Should I just give it up and stick to ducks?

Taken at a local college's botanic greenhouse since it was a rotten day. They were all handheld at 1:1 or very very close to that. (If someone says you can't do handheld 1:1 they're wrong.) ISO 800, 420EX flash with a Pocket Bounce, on a Sigma 105mm Macro.
So the question is: Should I just give up flora macro and stick to ducks? This place had some truly amazing plants from all over the world. I just don't know if I captured that interest.
//Edit: Ooops. I meant to post this in Critique. Please critique these in any way.

I agree with lamplight. I like #3 the best also. I've found taking a good floral picture is much harder than it looks.

#2 & 3 are kinda funky for lack of a better word. Now the trick here is to capture a duck munching on #1
I like them.

Think about a 500D for that 100-400. It's a lot cheaper than a "real" macro lens, and does some wonderful things.
100-400mm @ 400 with a 500D, 14.5" from the front of the lens. The eye is 3/8" diameter.

No, not at all. I think you have a good start. As someone else said, shooting flora is a lot harder than it looks and despite the wonders of all our macro toys, there is till a steep learning curve.
