Yes very interesting read.
Especially since I've been considering buying a backup battery. The advice here is to wait although how long to wait isn't clear. No one wants to be caught with no battery and in some great location to take shots.
Must be some happy compromise.

I read through some amount of the verbiage there. I lost interest about the point where the author starts discussing the NiCd 'memory' effect as if it was once real (clue: never happened, never will -- it is a symptom of one of more other failure modes [i.e. voltage depression and/or cell venting, etc.], and tends to be misclassified as 'memory effect', because that's what it 'looks' like).

My only remark is to remember that this fellow has a product to sell (a rather pricey one, I gather) that purports to condition and restore your precious rechargeable cells to their former glory.

I realize that he even has a pious page telling everyone that he really means to share his great wisdom with all of mankind, etc, etc, but he really does have a product to sell, and this web site is one means of driving prospective customers to his site.

That said, there is a lot of useful information there, but there is also some rather odd pseudo-scientific stuff thrown in as well, presented in the guise of 'it works this way, because it makes sense'. Such stuff is what folks that make and sell snake oil live off of, as well.

Just keep a questioning attitude when reading the site. If something doesn't make sense, or is presented an a 'it is because it is' kind of way, I'd look for corraborating information elsewhere. Unfortunately, the web is just crammed full of self-proclaimed 'experts' on various subjects like this.

So, who's to say who's right? Guess I'd ask somebody that doesn't have a fiducial interest in the answer, for starters.

Not always.

They can also be manufactured cheaply, without some needed safeguards, especially for Li-Ion chemistry, which has a habit of catching fire and/or exploding, if abused.

Do a Google for 'exploding Nokia cell phones' to get an idea of what happens when you buy cheap knock-offs.

I'd steer way clear of those $5 EBay batteries. Not worth my life.
