The extra reach you get with the longer focal length makes this lens superb for butterflies. Here are a couple of views of a Gatekeeer, taken on 7D. The images are not cropped.

Yes, thanks Lester. It seemed a little extravagant, given the cost, but the results are superb. It's great when your subject has good eyesight - one of my first shots with it was of a wolf spider with egg sac, and with shorter lenses they've always cleared off before I got near.

It's also great for hoverflies. Here I used a flash to freeze the wings.

Forgive me if this has already been covered.
Is a 180mm on a crop body camera like the 7D still a 1:1 or will it now take an image 1.6x larger than 1:1? Is it now a 1:1.6?
Thanks

 Just received my sample :D .. like with 85L ... AF system seems to be optimized (not linear at all), really fast and accurate, exactly same league as my 135L and 300L2.8 (assuming you shoot action/sport beyond 2 meters)
AF is terribly slow for macro range but accurate (as 85L beneath 2m), well done Canon, not like sigma, it's definitely the most clever AF system.
It sounds better than what I thought after reading peoples feelings.
I will have a chance to use a (1DMKIII+5DMKII) + (24L+85L180L) for a university graduation ceremony this week end (no macro expected, but I just need ultra sharp lenses and I will leave my 300L2.8 at home this time).

First going out, no macro, but just real life testing ... This lens is really ultra sharp from edge to edge, and with this length it makes really worth having borders and corners as sharp as centre.
For 85l is not really worth, but 180mm that's a really nice feature.
AF is accurate too ..

180L is a real L lens, we get really homogeneous results when using in the same situation 24L+85L+180L, I am still dreaming of a much faster 200L2.0 with IS, but 180L is like a small step in that direction.
Now I am waiting for a good opportunity for macro ... and a 2 days trip in Paris (1DMKIII+5DMKII+24L+85L+180L+rstrap)...

Has anyone noticed a problem with this lens when using it with a 1.4X extender on a 5D2?
For some reason I lose AF capability when the focus ring is turned towards MFD...but towards infinity, suddenly AF works again and I can AF (even to MFD). It seems that when the ring is initially towards the MFD end, it doesn't seem to work?

I just tested my TC1.4XII on a 5DMKII, here too, seems to focus fast and accurate only with range limiter set to 1.5m in any position .. but between 0.48 and 1.5m AF is locked too.. untill I focus manually more than 1 or 2 meters.
I don't think to be a real issue in real life, but that's strange.

C.Fn.III.1 Autofocus Drive - set this to 0:Focus search on.
Needs to be set to 0 with this lens for AF and close focusing (< 1.5 m) anyway.
The AF system can't calculate where to move the lens due to the large amount of blur at MFD when nothing is in focus, which is why it should be allowed to hunt :D. And an extender only makes this worse :D.
Kind regards, Wim

Thank you, I tested that setup, it seems to AF this time but there is a lantecy of nearly 1 second before it decide to move .
I don't think AF with TC1.4XII near MFD is really worth to use, MF should be more efficient.

Yes, it does take a long time - it first tries for a while without moving the lens, before it finally decides to try something else :D.
Close to MFD, even without 1.4X Extender, it is still more efficient to use MF :D.

Thanks Wim, I didn't post clearly but for some reason it actually loses AF capability altogether, as in the camera switches to MF (with AF disabled) when the focus ring starts off at < 1.2m (AF enabled when >1.2m). I suspect may be contact problem :(

I made the bracket with different things (novoflex flexible short arm, spyderpro holster, Chinese car vent mount for Galaxy Note). I will make the USB host cable cleaner soon.
Actually, I am just learning that lens, in two weeks it will be a part of a light travel combo with 24L+85L180L+TC2X in a Sling O Matic 30. I have chosen that lens because of it's amazing sharpness (in the same league as the 24 and 85). I will put some new real life samples after that trip in Paris.
And for the one button Apple world, No !! Like many other things with apple, god Steve didn't allowed such use ..
You need to join a world of freedom with google's android  and then you will get many functions you can't imagine on an iphone (many phone screen size, active widgets, 100% surfing on the web including all flash photo slideshows like with smugmug, controlling your dslr with various software, free 3d car or walk navigation, transferring wireless your music from your PC, watching your divx or recorded TV shows in any format, etc ....) I've quit my iphone 3G for a samsung S2 than Note with no regret.

Lightweight travel kit? Now I can confess my use for this — street, with a bunch of zeiss primes. I need something longer than a 100 and my 70-200 2.8 is an odd addition to this kit of primes. Yeah, the sharpness. But I always read that it really wants a tripod.

I've also made some AF test a couple of minutes while walking around ..
It looks fast and accurate ... it's not that easy to take birds while flying, but 180L manage to have a consistent focus even with heavy backgrounds.

This thread seems to move slowly! Here's one I took today. It's actually five shots stacked into one to give good depth on the flowers while keeping the background well blurred.

Not been replaced yet.
There were rumours of a replacement 200 f4 IS Macro, but they have been around since the 100L came out. I wouldn't take any notice of the rumour mill.
Any macro IS lens in this focal length range will double in price and I suspect need a much larger front element anyway.

Yes, the 180L is already an expensive lens. It's razor sharp too, so I can't see why I would need an upgrade.

Thank you
I use Helicon for android to control a Galaxy 10.1 to automate the stacking procedure .. it's fast and reliable to shot.
Helicon software is a piece of jewel to adjust post processing and avoid most of ghosts shadows, while keeping the 180L sharpness even if it takes time to stack the 50 pictures.
