I am currently in the process of getting a Drebel. And though I don't have it yet, I am already looking into lenses and reading every review I can find :)
I've heard a lot about this 50mm 1.8. I am planning on getting the Kit lens with my Drebel when i buy it. So do you think it would really be good to also have the 50mm 1.8?
Does anyone have any samples taken in low light with this lens? (I've need a small number of pictures, but i need to see more to really decide...)
Edit: Also I have a chance of getting a good deal on one... so I was wondering, should i go for it?

GET IT!
GET IT!
GET IT!
Honestly, since I bought that lens, and now the 85 f1.8, I repacked the kit lens into the DRebel box. Then again, I like primes and dont mind moving around to get a good shot. I will probably only bring out the kit lens for wide angle shots of architecture. Then again, I am an anomaly. :)
My fav shots in LOW light are the ones I posted recently from a bodybuilding show. No flash used, only stage lighting.
Most shots were at f2.0, 1/60, ISO400 (a couple at f2.0, 1/125,ISO800).

The build quality isnt the best, but still not bad at all. The optical quality is superior to some $1000 zooms.
There are alot of samples from this lens here:

At the price of this lens it is a must have, period due to the speed of the lens and the quality at which it can handle that speed. Words mean nothing though. As such i'll let the pictures speak for them selves. Note the DOF on the last two.

Every single EOS EF user should have a 50mm!
It is a very sharp lens and in some ways the results compare well with an "L" lens, costly hundreds more. Its very fast maximum 1.8 is also superb. I cannot get over the quality of some of the shots that I have taken with the 50mm 1.8, particularly when I think about how little I paid for it!
The downsides are the obvious restrictions that having a primes lens places on you (although as it happens, I like that restriction, one less choice to worry about, so I can just get on taking pictures) and the fact that the mark 2 is lightweight and has a plastic mount. If you can find a good mark 1 with a metal mount, it would be worth paying a bit extra, in my opinion. In addition, once you take into account the 1.6 multiplier for the 300d, you have around a 75mm to 80mm lens which is still very useable, but obviously not as wide.
Don't think about it, just go straight down the store and buy one now!

As the other posts mention, you cannot overemphasize the value of this lens for the price. It is incredibly sharp, very fast, and a great addition to any kit for the expense (under $100).

Given the price of 50mm 1.8 it's a crime not to have one ;)
I got a DRebel kit and two prime lens 50mm 1.8 and 132mm 2.8. I noticed that I use the kit lens only if I need wide angle. f/1.8 on 50mm lens makes a HUGE difference compared to f/5.6 of the kit lens.
the picture below was taken with available light 1/30 sec, f/1.8, ISO 200:

The only reason not to buy 50mm 1.8 is if you can afford 50mm 1.4 ;)

It's only around $225 more than the 1.8... Sell one of your Ls if you have to. ;)

Alex,
In case you have not noticed it, there is a 50mm for sale on the market place forum for about 65$ plus a bit of postage. Check it out!
