I sent in the lens two days ago because the focus drive was stuck and it'll only AF when I'm feeling lucky. Manual focus still works though. I just got off the phone with Canon a few minutes ago and they've informed me that it's "irrepairable" and they don't have any spare parts for such an old design :( .

So it's either the 70-300 IS (non DO of course) or 70-200 f4 (non-IS) for me now I suppose. I wonder how much Canon will offer me for trade in. Any thoughts? Lens decision and estimated value

is it still under warranty somehow? if so then they might hook ya up a little bit, but if it isn't then you will get nothing. Sucks your lens died, time to upgrade to the 70-200

Nope, the lens is about 15 years old  . I believe I can get a bit of value because the last time I brought in my broken Digital Elph for service, Canon offered me $100 trade in value for a dead camera - not bad IMO

Edit: The Elph was the first ever from 2000...brought it in last year. $500 depreciation over 6 years....hmmm

Imagine what you'd get for a dead 1D today, and compare it with the original price from 6 years ago. With the amount of money lost to depreciation, you could buy a used car.

Computers - $2K to ZERO in 3 years. :)

No pity for you (as per your sig). No, far from it. We are glad that you will finally have a chance to step up to a serious telezoom :)

Depends how much you need image stabilization. The 70-300 IS is no slouch in the image quality department. Lots of people say it ain't an L.. well, I have enough L floating around here (I have owned six, kept most but not all) that I can tell you it is PRETTY DANG CLOSE. Only concern is that the 70-300 IS build is VERY plasticky (even compared to midrange EF-S gear) and micro USM is not as fast as I'd like it to be.

The 70-200/4 needs no introduction though, it is awesome, end of story. Ring USM, *FAST* autofocus, FTM, and awesome build and optics. No weather sealing (only the IS 70-200's of both apertures have it), no image stabilization.

Somehow I can't restrain myself from constantly eyeing the 70-200 f2.8...
