I recently ordered a G5, and I see that both the 52mm and 58mm adapters are popular. I'm trying to find out which one is most recommended and why?
Thanks!

It all depends on the lenses you want to use. For the Canon lens you'll need the 58 and for Raynox (for instance) you'll need the 52 or a step down ring from 58 to 52 if you already have the 58 adapter.

I personally went for 58mm adapter for my G3, because I had polarizer and UV filter for it from my EOS Elan (US version from EOS 100) days. However, if you don't already have any lenses for 58mm, 52mm might be good choice, because 58mm is quite good at blocking optical viewfinder, AF assisting light and flash. Of course, if your using LCD as viewfinder, then you don't care about the first one, and if you have 420EX or other external flash unit, then second and third argument don't carry much weight either and its really upto your personal preference.

I just purchased a 52MM for my G3 from:

52MM are generally cheaper than 58MM filters, so that is also a good deciding factor to think about. Like previous posts say unless you already have 58MM filters then the 52MM is the one to go for.
I also inluded this link as they have some good reading about lens coatings and they sell filters.

I hope this helps a bit.

I have this same problem of which to get for my G-5 also. The idea of getting BOTH and leaving apropriate adapters/filters on each was mentioned somewhere so they could be installed quickly via the adapters bayonet mount vs. having to screw on and off everytime. The more I think about it, the more this idea appeals to me.

Well... I picked up one of each... but I can't seem to figure out how the heck they go on the G5? The opening on the adapter is the exact same size as the front lense on the G5, so I dont see how it attaches. Am I missing something obvious?

I think the 52mm looks a little less dorky than the 58 mm. With the 52mm, it looks almost as if it were part of the camera originally. Many people confuse my G3 with a silver 52mm for a film camera or SLR.

gonna be different here...
Since I own the Canon adapters (3 of them at $15 each from a local store) and I own the Canon conversion lenses (WC-DC58N and TC-DC58N) and a bunch of filters from an old SLR (all 58mm) I stuck with the 58mm adapter.
I have not had any issues with the Canon adapters. I do have 1 52mm adapter that is required in order to attach to my telescope.
What do I recommend? Depends on the equipment you have and intend to buy. If you only want to use the Canon conversion lenses (which are great, BTW) get the 58mm. Filter cost should not come into the equation, as with a little looking around, the price difference between 58 and 52 mm filters are very low. The place I buy my filters have no difference in cost from 49mm through 62mm (roughtly)
If you are planning on getting 3rd party conversion lenses, they range from 49mm to 58mm usually.
