View Full Version : How much is too much? 15 lbs for a shoulder bag + 5 lbs tripod?

Going to new york. I just weighed my set up which I'm planning to "live out of" and it's a 15 lbs shoulder bag.

There's 10 pounds of photo gear and 5 pounds for food, water, clothes.

I have to take for sure:
50/1.8
18-55
rebel with grip
Two batteries

I also included sigma 70-200... but now I'm thinking 135/3.5 is a better choice at 1/5 the weight. Also a flash would be nice...

What's the tripod policy at the museums?

I don't want to lug around 70-200 just for the statue of libery pictures. What's the angle on it when I'm passing by in the staten island ferry?

I don't know how much weight will be too much. I will be walking around all day, obviously.

Leave the 70-200, bring the 135. That will be more than adequate to shoot the SoL from the Staten Is. ferry. Have you got a 1.4x that you can bring along to get to almost the same FL without the bulk and weight?

Leave the tripod, too...if NYC museums are like most I have been in around the world, they don't like the nuisance to other viewers, the impediment to flow of foot traffic.

LOL... I can't seem to get out of the house without 40-60 lbs luggin behind me...

Actually, I disagree completely... bring the 70-200 & 18-55... the 50 and 135 would be the least used IMO.

Don't worry about the extra 3-5 lbs... you'll be sorry you did when you start shooting.

I worked at the Museum of Natural History this past summer, and the policy there is no flash or tripods, everything else is fair game.
