I have the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 on my 400D (XTi) and am very happy with its general performance. My questions are
i) Does anyone use this lens to shoot weddings and if so how does it perform ?
ii) Given its fast AF, IS, USM and high IQ, would the 50mm 1.8 Mk II outperform it ?
iii) Ditto for the 50mm 1.4
thanks

i) Many of us use it and love it. I am a convert from the 16-35 +24-70 combo.
ii) Not a chance
iii) So close, it's negligible. 1.4 only wins on speed.

i. It should perform the same way as you've used it thus far. How do you mean? It's especially good for low-light, hand-held situations that many weddings are full of.
It's my next lens. The only down side is the EF-S, and a notorious dust problem. Do you have the dust inside the lens problem?

the canon 17-55 is the primary lense on my 30D. Its an awesome combination and I have been lucky to have only a couple of dust specs in my lense.

the 17-55 is an ideal lens for using on a crop body for a wedding.

It's an awesome lens. Will it outperform the 50mm lenses? I would say it would beat the 50 1.8 in every aspect. The 17-55 is ridiculously sharp. The 1.4? Well, I would say primes are used for different purposes than zooms so it's difficult to compare the two. In any case, the 17-55 is a winner of a lens. There is no better normal zoom for 1.6 bodies imo.

i) Me, 75% of each wedding (average probably 20 weddings per year and growing).
ii) Throw away the 50mm F1.8, run over it with your car, or use it as a paper weight. That's all it's good for. Not a professional lens.
iii) Good lens, be careful below F2.0 (sharpness).

Too light to use as a paper weight! :D

Thanks for all the replies. Seems I really have no excuse to buy a new lens
I have used the 17-55 for 4 months now and had no problems with dust. I dragged it around dusty shooting environments in Vietnam for a couple of weeks with the camera often slung unbagged over my shoulder while travelling on a motorbike. Seems to be the luck of the draw, or perhaps the newer models have sorted the dust issue.

Great lens for wedding - and the only one I use - it lives on my 30D!
