Ok, i made a silly mistake, I was adding pictures to my harddrive... straight from my camera (oops) instead of putting them on the desktop first. I had my harddrive window open and my camera window open (so i could transfer the pics) and I accidently deleted all the pics I put on the harddrive, as I was deleting each of the pics on the memory cards (SD), so that was a mistake, but my harddrive has an undo option, but somehow I didn't get the last 300 or 400 pics (probably cause the recycle bin wasn't big enough for 1266 pics) but somehow i did get the very last 45 (odd). Anyway, I located the files and they are "overwritten" or damaged. I was wondering if theres a program to repair overwritten files, if thats possible. I have them but they are in an "unknown file format" even though they are .jpgs. If anyone can help, greatly appreciated.

You can try something like a photo recovery program. "click for example (http://www.photosrecovery.com/)". They are still on the SD card and these programs and rebuild the directory and if the card has been unused it can recover many if not all of the pics. Once they are damaged on the hard drive though, its a real crap shoot. You could go in there and rebuild the header but if any of the data is corrupted, the pic is damaged anyway.

the problem is, i deleted all the pics from the SD cards and made way for new pics few days later (because i never knew i could recover them from the cards on saturday). Basically, I took pics on friday, lost some 400 of them, deleted them, never knew I could recover them from the SD cards (now i do) and took more pics on sunday with the same cards. Oh well, i guess i'm screwed. no problem, i did learn something new though.

Can you go and take those piccies again? You never know, you might take them better next time...

You can still get some of them back with the recovery program. If you too 400 pictures the first day and then only 200 the next, you could possible get 200 back from the first day depending on how your card processed the images.. good luck

no, it was at an RM Auction.

I got the pictures back, its just they are in an "unknown" file format, even though the extension is JPG... but I am not sure if i can get them to be repaired or restored (IE actually seeing an image on each file). Thats where I am at now, i've found them but can't do anything with them yet.

Why not post one as an attachment to your webspace and try and see if one of us can open or repair it?

With what application are you trying to open them? I have found that Irfanview will often open and repair jpgs with corrupted headers that other programs reject.

any photo program, mainly photoshop, the windows XP picture viewer can't either. Irfanview won't even open it... and I use that to do batch resizes to all my photos. I noticed that a lot of harddrives (seagate, simpletech?) come with BounceBack express from CMS, backup software... dunno if that would work (i haven't looked at it yet... about to though)... thanks for all your help though.

EDIT: heres the software i'm talking about... anyone have any background knowledge on this?
