I might be wrong but I believe it is a thumbnail file. It is a jpeg image with a THM extension.
Change the extension to "jpg" and you will be able to open it like a normal image file

Naw, you don't need it. It's the small preview file it creates of the actual RAW. If you change the .THM to .JPG, it'll open just like a jpg image.

Maybe this will help:

"It's always a good idea to keep .THM and .CRW files together when you work with your images. Most of the information contained in the THM file is not contained in the CRW file, and if it is, most applications are unaware of this, or cannot access this information in the .CRW file.
When you move, copy or rename your CRW files, or when you burn them to CD-ROM for long term archiving, always keep the THM files with the associated CRW files. This makes sure that you always have access to all the EXIF and IPTC information associated with your raw CRW files."

The THM file is just a thumbnail (in JPG format) of the RAW image with the same name. You can actually view it by either changing the THM to JPG or by associating the THM to the same program that JPG is associated to.

FVU and a few other programs use it for quickly displaying the thumbnail of your RAW image. It the THM file doesn't exist for a RAW file, the RAW file has to get converted in order for the thumbnail of it to show and that usually takes a little longer than just referencing the THM file.

Use Breezebrowser and it manages the thumbnails with the RAW files automatically...when moving, copying, deleting, etc...
