View Full Version : Walk around gear

I feel, like I am the only person who is incapable of leaving the house, with one lens.
For some reason, I don't get it. For me, I could buy a 24-70L, but it wouldn't be a walk around. I'd still leave the house with other pieces of glass.
I realized the other day, I visualize scenes, and compositions, I wish to capture, that could not be captured without specific gear. Sometimes it may be narrow dof from fast glass, or getting the field of view or distortion from another lens.
The lens that I sort of understand is something like an 18-200, but you have to stop down that sucker, which is okay in daylight shooting, but then you lose any narrow DOF and bokeh you already had.
This probably explains why I'm a sucker for primes.
Is there anybody else like me?

Hey, even though I keep promising myself I will just walk around with one lens, I take my entire kit bag out!!

I do the same :D I carry 4 lenses with me - well they might be needed for that special shot  There's nothing worst then seeing a great shot only to realise the particular lens that would be so suitable for it is sitting at home

I schlep my backpack, with 5 or 6 lenses, to and from the office everyday, just in case.

Exactly. My peace of mind is important.
Often I have shots that could had been improved drastically, or achieved by a longer focal length lens that I do not have (just using an example here.) For that I'm not happy, but I don't knock myself in the head either, as I simply don't own a lens suited for that (yet). If I was to come up with a shot I thought was really neat though, or try to capture something in general, and a specific lens was needed I did not have, I'd be rather frusterated.

On my 1.6x crop the 17-40L was a perfect walkaround length. Loved it so. On my current 1.3x... the 17-40L is also nice, but I find myself wanting a little length. I'm considering the 24-105 but fearing the 24mm is far too narrow for the wide end. However, a 28 prime kept me very happy.
On a full frame, 24-105L... no questions asked =)

I can shoot with anything. Just wait for the moment instead of pre-visualizing. Especially on the streets - if you pre-visualize you come back with nothing.
See what's happening in front of you. Note the interesting light or interaction and capture it.

I supose that would do for me, especially on full frame where 24 is plenty wide.

The bag is either in my house when I'm home, or in my car when I'm out. I'm never without everything. There's no such thing as a walkaround for me.
