View Full Version : Jessops (UK) 1D mkIII back-order list

Popped into Edinburgh Jessops to enquire about the availability of the 1D mkIIIN - they have stocked the mk IIN before (not your average branch), so I thought it worth asking.

Apparently, they have 135 units on back-order throughout the UK - but the sales-girl (who has been through the 1DmkIII training/familiarisation) seemed to think that stock was flowing already and that they'd had one in the shop...

I didn't think it was shipping for another few weeks - mebbe she'd got her hands on a demo-model briefly???

Anyone had any more tangible results in the UK?

She's correct but glamming it up a bit. The Edinburgh branch had a Canon open day there last week where a rep brought one along. Jessops haven't shipped any 1DMkIII's at all yet, and as such their head office have back orders from stores for about 140 as of this afternoon, but the head office haven't actually ordered them yet, as they've not been instructed they're available for shipping from Canon yet. My branch, along the way in Glasgow is actually about the same size and have two on order. We'll get them as soon as Edinburgh does. The two for Glasgow are actually ordered under my name.

That fits - thanks.

Being as just about everywhere will be clamouring for stock - and selling at basically the same price, I'm tempted to order one now as well.

Did they charge you in full up-front or take a deposit?

No charges at all matey. It's not listed as a special order item on Jessops stock listings so therefore doesn't incur the 25% charge to order it. Therefore order one, pay when it arrives. You may find that Edinburgh already have one on order, they are one of the 8 (I think) World Camera Centres in Jessops chain, though only just, their status was converted a few weeks ago, and as such, the company has always claimed that a WCC (snigger) has stock of everything they sell, though this remains a loose definition. I was asked to go over there, but the commute across wasn't worth the pay raise or the perceived 'superior importance' to me. Plus I'll likely be leaving Scotland soon so... But that said we have two on order in Glasgow, for me, and they're actually so the store can get stock. Edinburgh may have done the same, if you're serious about ordering, before you order, ask them if you can have 'theirs' when it comes in instead. May get you higher up the list. May not too, depends if they've ordered one and are feeling friendly to be blunt.

Cheers indeed.

They're just doubling the size of the store - other than the occasional L-series and one or two 1D / D2's, they've hardly been much to get excited about over the last year or so.

Regards.

That's because my store has traditionally been the place to go in Scotland! ;) Check their new 'black' shirts though, very much a superior move there! ;) (snigger)

Just been in to the new Edinburgh store - night-and-day over the old one. Asked about the mk III delivery dates - 'mid-April' (yeah-right). 25% deposit if you want to reserve one...

...or 10% off if paid in full up-front. So I did.:D

Only one other PIF order (out of roughly 5 reservations) at Edinburgh, so I've now just got to wait it out...

Congrats there Myles.

See this thread here:- clicky (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=297474) for what I found out about the ordering as of late last week.

so they have guaranteed you a price of £2700?

manipula

Jessops list price for it in the UK is £2999.99. I severely doubt but will be gladly proven wrong that they'll knock it down to £2700 like that.

Myles7

The 10% off was due to the relaunch weekend for the brand new World Camera Centre (WCC-spec) Edinburgh store. Didn't realise it at the time, but everything in the shop was 10% off (I'd maybe have picked up the 17-40 L or similar if I'd known).

So yup, I paid £2700 as my full and final payment. I figured that it would get me to the top of the delivery list and that it would take an age for the price to come back down to that level.

At that price, I'm not too worried about having a huge chunk of money sitting in limbo until the final delivery date.

Should have bought a 1Ds or two while I was there...

You did really ******* well there Myles, the Jessops purse strings are as tight as anything at the moment so for them to be giving you £300 off is a huge bargain!

Not that I really believe it, I was passing the Edinburgh Jessops today and popped in to check on progress.

'May 1st - It's the first time the system has shown a definite date'

Well, that'd be nice if it turns out to be true.

manipula
11th of April 2007 (Wed), 17:52
I'll check when I'm back in for you Myles. I'm off work with a cold currently. I suspect they're taking that off quoted delivery dates the system shows. Canon are usually pretty good at keeping to dates, but it's not a definite always.

You tend to see (though usually on already launched items if I remember rightly) that delivery dates come and go, and become back orders, on high demand items. But like I said I'm just checking as I can't see the system whilst I'm off. Finger's crossed for you. :)

Myles7

Are you back at work yet, Manipula???;)

manipula
21st of April 2007 (Sat), 19:54
Ah. Yes. ****, sorry! I did look too, and there's a single quoted delivery date from Canon for May 1st. Treat it with a pinch of salt! ;) That said orders and stock for the other new arrivals, 580EX II are moving aplenty though not near stores yet, no sign at all of any orders for the 16-35MkII from head office though there appears to have been interest. The new Sigma Sd14 wasn't showing either when I looked...

Spoke to my branch yesterday - they spent quite some time tracking down people in the warehouse/HQ who could actually give some meaningful information. The *current* expectation is now for the last week in May due to 'production problems' - but I was warned that this couldn't be guaranteed.

Ho-hum.

manipula
3rd of May 2007 (Thu), 20:47
I told you to take early May with a pinch of salt! ;)

I feel for you though dude, that's a lot of cash gone to be staring at an empty hole in the kit bag. Almost tempted to pop over and see it when it arrives, as I doubt we'll get one for a while yet. <highly jealous>

Myles7
4th of May 2007 (Fri), 18:04
It was some time ago that I'd kinda decided - when I finally get the phone call - to ask them to get the battery on charge ready for collection...;)

If I get any kind of advance notice, by all means come and see it - but if it's notice on the day, I might have to bring it over to you:lol:

manipula
4th of May 2007 (Fri), 20:42
LOL!

I have to admit it's not a camera that I'd buy just yet. I'd prefer a 1 series FF first, but the more I read about it the more I'm deeply intrigued by what it offers. I doubt I'll actually see one in our store before I end up having to leave the branch/Scotland which is tentatively pencilled in for August.

Word of warning, if you ask them to get the battery on charge, make sure you inform them STRICTLY not to have their own play with it. I think it'll be the natural curiosity of most in there, but I know I'd want my own example untouched. Not because they'll wreck it or anything but just because it's my money and I want it minty you know... :p

Myles7
5th of May 2007 (Sat), 15:40
That did occur to me - the lure of hearing 10fps would probably be fairly irresistible...;)

Myles7

Popped in again today (mainly to have a quick try with my new 16-35 mk II on a 1.3x-crop body) and to check the latest.

Allegedly should have a 'definitive' date on Monday. Lots of apologies from the staff - which I rebuffed on the basis that everyone *knew* it was going to be a wating game.

Handled a 1Ds mk II for the first time - actually my first hands-on 1D-anything play. I'm *really* looking forward to delivery now... :)

manipula
12th of May 2007 (Sat), 20:38
LOL!

I admit to forgetting 1-series stuff are so special. We handle them all so much all day every day they just become objects you know. Nothing special. That said I'd still pay the money for one, but not for the camera as an object, but for the images it produces. You get blase with anything when you're around it all the time.

Myles7
14th of May 2007 (Mon), 14:23
WOOHOO!

Phoned again today. Allegedly should be available for collection on Friday:eek:

Unfortunately, I am heading down to Yorkshire on Thursday night - so I won't be able to get my hands on it until Tuesday - assuming it *does* ship on time.

The chap did suggest double-checking on Thursday just in case...

....oooh, pleeeease Santa!:D

manipula
14th of May 2007 (Mon), 19:51
So in five weeks time it may appear then! :p

Fingers crossed for you dude.

Myles7

Probably!

Myles7

Now reported as delivery to warehouse on the 28th with store-delivery upto a week later.

AdamJL
23rd of May 2007 (Wed), 05:29
You'll get it in 2009 at this rate.
Paper launches suck ass.

Boooo @ Canon for doing paper launches. They should have the stock ready when they announce the damn camera.

Myles7
24th of May 2007 (Thu), 14:53
Not too upset with them not having the camera available at the time of the announcement, but they are not 'managing expectations' with their repeated slippages.

I'd rather they had told us that the first would ship here at the end of June - and then to get a pleasant phone-call a few weeks early - rather than this 'are we there yet' repetition.

Ho-hum. Again.

manipula
25th of May 2007 (Fri), 21:13
They will try to tell you good news Myles, and it's with good intentions. However I suspect that ultimately it's only a good guess, as as far as I know (although the Edinburgh World Camera Centre may be privy to more than we) any delivery dates on it are just hopeful wishes fueled by rumours. Tell them bluntly, you don't wanna be told anything else other than when it will actually arrive, even if that isn't next week. truth even if harsh is better than well meant BS.

It becomes very easy to try and tell people good news based on strong suggestions of delivery etc but sometimes truth is better even if it does mean it's a little way away yet. I'd guess though that within Jessops very few actually know (if any) exactly when they will arrive, and I'd guess that none of those will be in stores.

That said I hope I'm wrong matey! :)

Myles7
30th of May 2007 (Wed), 14:10
Finally *received* a phone-call -from the HO/warehouse. Should be in the shop on Friday.

Myles7
31st of May 2007 (Thu), 13:38
It has arrived. YEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSS!

Only one to make it through this branch so far. They were soooo hoping it was one for demo.... LOL.

manipula
31st of May 2007 (Thu), 20:58
Demo my ass! No way they'd get a standard stock body before a customer order! Congrats Myles, let us know how it is!

Myles7

It's jolly nice!

The only motorsport I can find this weekend is the Bikefair at Knockhill on Sunday. Not my normal target, but it should give the camera a good workout.
