Hi I have this wonderfull 1100 AD church to shoot a wedding at in april, lovely from the outside as you can see but so dark inside with small stained glass windows and as the churchs here love to save electricity there will be very little chance of lights.
Thank goodness for the 17-55is 2.8 I am amazed at how good the shots are and how the lens gathers in the available light, my sigms 105mm at 2.8 would not af  at all.
So lots of money to buy but it will pay for its self many times over.

What shutter speeds are you getting? Remember motion blur, even people apparently standing still are actually moving. At 1/30th don't expect a heck of a lot of keepers, at 1/60th better, 1/100th should be ok most of the time. I was shooting at ISO3200, F2.8, 1/30th for part of yesterday, that's pretty rough.

Well I should be ok but I had 1/50 f2.8 iso 1000 ( so I have a little to spare) on the shot no2 number 3 is a little bit of a problem as I had 1/10 f.4 iso1000
so thinking about it I should still get by if I go to 2.8 iso1600 I will go back a few more times before the wedding as I do like to see the different settings as the weather changes:(
The point of the post was that the sigma 105mm 2.8 was complete crap, I should have tried the tameron 28-75 2.8 but to be honest it has not been the best of lens for me so did not bother and the canon works a dream and for out door shots it fantastic as pic 1 shows
Thanks for the input tim

Any 2.8 lens will be challenged by such conditions, IS or not .. are you allowed to use strobes during the ceremony? The walls seem light enough to bounce off.
1/30 at ISO 3200 and 2.8 is where you were yesterday, and if you shoot the whole wedding at that setting subject motion blur will become a problem, not to mention trying to print from such a high ISO. Maybe rent some faster glass? .. 85 1.2 perhaps?

A tip for the not so faint hearted. Underexpose a step, shoot RAW and use a noise reduction software if the noise is too painful. Last time I did that, and it turned out great, as I wanted at least 1/60th for my 70-200/2.8L IS.

I have to agree with you the times when I have been shooting event photography and a horse comes into view as the sun gets covered and you take the shot under exposed but RAW and sometimes noiseware gives you the shot.
Everything I shoot is in raw I really dont understand those who knock it I want every advantage going for the picture:D
