I am starting to plan a trip up to DC in the late Spring/Early summer. Other that the obvious locations, Zoo, Mall, Smithsonian, etc, where are some good, sometimes overlooked areas, for some photo ops?

National Cathedral, up near where Mass. Ave. and Wisconsin Ave. cross (not all that convenient to Metro, several blocks south of Tenleytown stop). Georgetown (again, not Metro) has a number of colonial and early Federalist houses. Octagon House of the American Institute of Architects. The C&O Canal & towpath, again around Georgetown. You might want to take a tour of the Kennedy Center. And don't forget all the various monuments/memorials other than the Washington & Lincoln that are scattered around (Jefferson, Vietnam Vets, Korean Vets, FDR, to name a few). By the King Street Metro Station in Alexandria there's a Washington Memorial built by the Masons. National Aquatic Gardens in Kenilworth. National Botanical Gardens are on the Mall, but often overlooked.

Jeffery,
We are surrounded by Civil War battlefield parks...if history is your thing...bring your WA lens and plan on a day trip to Gettsburg, Sharpsburg, or Manassas. Mount Vernon on the Potomic is nice as well.
If you like full sized airplanes...go the Air & Space Annex at Dulles Airport. It cost $12 to park and entrance is free. The place is unbelivable! Takes a full day to stop and look at everything...here is a sample of Air & Space and one from Manassas:

Any recommendations for sunset pics?

Tidal Basin looking over at Jefferson Memorial maybe. Just need to be careful in your timing since there're going to be either arrivals or departures from National flying by every minute or so. Possibly Arlington Cemetery or looking over at Theodore Roosevelt Island from the Kennedy Center depending on just when you're there. Maybe run up to Kensington and try for the Mormon Temple against the sunset.
