His watch band opened up... his eyes are closed... you can see his other hand in the dark... he's wearing two shirts? he wasn't singing, he was yawning?.. His last name isn't Italian or Spanish, it's Portuguese?... maybe you ought to give use a clue?

Good point. Lots of ways to do a B/W conversion. Adobe LR and CS3 offer a very nice 'expanded' channel mixer for raw...

could someone possibly give me some tips on shooting singers/bands in low light.
im taking some shots of a friends band on sun and was just wondering on what settings etc to use.
is my best bet to just shoot in manual, highest ISO possible and use spot metering and meter off the face?
its nothing massive. in a small pub/bar, more than likely low light and i will be fairly close to them seeing as the place is pretty small.
any tips/advice welcome please.

thanks

Some tips in the FAQ: Click (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=226809).
General advise: Shoot *lots* of images. Use high ISO and fast lenses.
I use Av and evaluative mostly, in combination with EC. Sometimes M or spot metering.
Mostly tungsten WB. Mostly RAW.
Spot metering off the face, using M is a good method if light is fairly constant.

narlus
24th of March 2007 (Sat), 10:13
just remember that as a person turns in relation to the light, the amount hitting their face changes as well...getting an exposure via spot metering & manual is a good starting point, but you do need to keep on the situation as well, and may need to adjust exposure as needed.

lately i've been using Av and partial metering as a general rule of thumb (though if i'm using my 85, i use spot).

it was a stage prop; he took 'em out of his nose as the show progressed. i didn't realize who he was until after the show (i was there for the Melvins), but he was pretty entertaining. i did have the good fortune to see the Sugarcubes play once (about 18 years ago!), but didn't have a camera.

Oh bloody heck Dwight! How on earth are we supposed to compete with THIS?!

Its thanks to scandalous pictures like this, that I have finally been persuaded that HE should get that shockingly expensive 300 2.8L....

Lucky I know that you are a lovely, kind and considerate person, else I may have thought that you actually LIKE making us feel like we should clip shut our peli cases and stand quietly in the back, hoping one day we can measure up!

Everyone's photos are fantastic. There sure is a lot of inspiration out there for the inexperienced.

There are some great pics in this thread folks.

I'm wondering how you guys get those quality shots? Are you pros with credentials and allowed to take in professional gear? And where are you positioned? Many are not very angled upwards so they don't seem like front row positions.

Well, as for the few shots I posted:
I'm no pro. I used a 100-400mm IS L and sat back in the 7th or 8th row, still allowing me to get relatively tight shots. The light was mostly daylight but there were definitely some gels on these artists.

First l think these are great shots of Danielle in the sense of getting her personality and vibe, but I think there is some camera blur and subject blur and softness that could be sharpened. The last time I shot Danielle she looked like this:
http://www.dwightmccann.com/Images/T4T120806/DaniellePeck0029.JPG

but having done a private concert with her where we all hung out for a day at a winery (the winery is my client and I have connections with her label, Big Machine), see http://casacassara.com/ConcertAtTheEstate.htm, I know she never stops moving.

Don't agree there: I think it's the strongest image in the set. It could use a bit closer crop though (right & top).

Hi Simon, thanks. It's from a shoot I did over the weekend at a Gospel Choir Competition here in Cork, which took place in a cathedral. I didn't get his name unfortunately - his choir is from Limerick. This is about the only 'decent' pic I have of him - the others are on spec and routine, nothing to toot about.

I toyed with a few processing ideas in LR and it seems to have paid off as that's what I was attempting to achieve ;) .

Here's another from the same event, the choir is from Cavan and the winners of the competition - they really raised the roof (high as it was)! Processing wise I tried to go for that vintage slide film look.

Shanny, Where in Sacto will you shoot?

Go to Reno/Tahoe often?

I would recommend reading the FAQ Sticky at the top of this forum section... Also consider prime lenses for affordability and quality and the more expensive "L" zooms... I strongly recommend saving (save, save, save) and buy once...

You'll need fast lenses with a max. aperture of F2.8, consider Image Stabilization too... Prime lenses that work are the f1.2, f1.4 and f1.8, f2.0, while the zooms are all in the f2.8 range and some have IS (Image Stabilization)...
f1.2 is mostly a portrait lens quality and cost's upward of 1500 bucks... While a 50mm f1.8 is under $80...Thereafter you're in the $340 bracket and up, from there...

Check out the Lens Section for fast lenses... Best place to learn besides right here...Be patient and read a lot, and ask a lot of questions, before you spend any money... You'll have a great time...

Great closeup shots... Love the use of your long lens... Next time I ever get a chance to photograph an outdoor event, I'll be certain to bring along my 400mm 5.6L... Awesome stuff Joe...

EDIT: Just checked your clock/time stamp in the EXIF... Although the first photo is still in daylight hours, it looks like the last two are just after midnight? Must have been super consistent and strong lighting...

Wow, woman4life... these are real good for a small camera... They certainly compete with the best of the pics posted around here...

Thanks, John. :) I could tell the quality difference on a lot of shots, but the ones that worked, really worked. LOL The high zoom point and shoots do an excellet job for the outdoor shows. As for the delay, I shot with a Kodak 6490 for a long time, so I am rather used to it. In fact, I can get jump shots with the delay, but tend to shoot too soon now with the 20D. I really need to save for a good wide-angle fast zoom so I can work on the jump shots as I usually am close to the stage.

And, constrict... wow! Really nice shots.

Dang see what happens when I'm away! I'm all the way on page 10! Here's some older ones. Sorry Dwight that they are small. They are the ones that I put up on my website so that's the size I use. I know you have commented before about wanting them bigger!

I loved when Chad did the makeup. Last time I shot Mudvanye he didn't and it just wasn't the same..

Jada Pinkett Smith is the lead singer of Wicked Wisdom. They were on Ozzfest in 2005. They also toured with Sevendust after that.

Oh and Chad from Mudvayne, he used to always wear makeup but for some reason on their club tour before Ozzfest he didn't and then on the last tour with Korn he didn't. Don't know why. Didn't ask him. He just wanted to know what I thought of his Gorilla suit! Go figure!
