I finally was able to take a picture of my youngest daughter in a nice dress. This was shot with 300D and the kit lens. Only thing I did was resize the pic. All comments and tips are appreciated

Wonderfull! She is a real model.
As a feedback, I think I would have liked a little more light on her face. Probably you can still achieve this in Photoshop?

Pretty girl. I found the background too distractive though. I understand you just can't control the deph of field with this lens. I have it too - came with my Rebel. I never used it for portraits.

Yeah, pretty girl. The background is not that bad. But the road at the middle of the girl is rather annoying.

To avoid the distracting background, you may ask her to sit on the grass and shoot at a bit high position. Then the grass will fill the background. There may numerous other ways. Just try.

Thank you all for your great comments and tutoring. We where headed to a party. Had the camera in my hand and just had to take a PIC of her in her new dress. She had been bugging us about this party for 2 months. Thanks all of you

very good pic.

i agree with the one of the above posts. Drop the DOF, so the background becomes blurry. A little more contrasty would help. I like the pic, but how bout one where she is off center??

either way bravo!!!

I understand you just can't control the deph of field with this lens.
Shoot on either manual or aperature priority, and just open up the lens.

Such a sweet face :) For the DOF you can take the photo into a graphics program and duplicate the layer gaussian blur it and then erase out the girl. It is a little trick a lot of people use these days. My favorite pose for little girls in long dresses is to sit them on the ground foof the dress around them and have them look up at you, of course that is just me. Either way a sweet photo.
