new 400D or used 20D for back up body ??

size is not an issue for me ...actually xt line is way to small for me ...it just doesn't feel right in my hand
IQ should be comparable right .....what about iso performance ????

I use Xt's as my backup body, I don't really use them much though since they are backup gear. When I have had to use them I was happy I had them and the IQ is so similar the client didn't know the difference.

I think you have gone a long way toward answering your own question. If the XT line doesn't feel right in your hands - you also have 3200 ISO available if needed with the 20D, something the XTi doesn't offer.

The 20D. Just cause the controls are pretty much the same as your 5D.

Another thing to consider is the shutter rating. 50K vs 100K. A factor of 2... quite a difference!
