I've never shot in this thick fog type of show before, it was crazy. Autofocus was bouncing terribly and most of the shots were just hazy, I could barely see in front of me...the only shots I could get to turn out were in between the times that the fog machines kicked on. Oh well. Maybe KMB has some advice about shooting with smoke/fog?

1. Crazy crowd.

Nice images, nice lighting, nice crowd, nice smoke even ;)
I like #1, 2 and 8 best.
# 6 is nice, but a bit dark. In #3 and 4 I would have liked a bit more face.

I like what you've posted, nice job. I like 2, and also think 6 would be better if not so dark.

Which lens did you use for these shots? I'm seeing them tomorrow night!

I saw you got middle fingered on # 1..lol... Nice shots, I love them. Did you use MF since your AF didn't function well?

I used the 24-70 on some, and 70-200 IS on others.

I still used AF, it just took some patience since it was bouncing around so much.

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Great shots!

The best shots I have got in fog/smoke I have waited until the fog swirls away from the face of the subject with the lighting behind them - lock AF and shoot.

Otherwise live with a #8 type shot which is pretty good. The worst thing I find about fog/smoke apart from it sometimes throwing off the AF a bit is that it can cause more noise.

#1 is a grand image! I like them all. Is this a religious group? Playing in a church?

Geez, Narlus, should I not have asked? :D I have so little experience with churches that I would have no idea ... is there a rule against lights and suspended ceilings in churches?

well i'm probably stereotyped by the churches i've been in (either fairly stark swedish protestant ones, or ornate catholic ones)...

you gotta start shooting some metal shows w/ Kalle :D

Just in case you plan to photograph a wedding or something in a church...

Pictures by candle light in a church are in order for everybody to try at least once...What an eye opener...

I was invited to photograph the Chancellor of Ireland and my boss, the DA of Nassau County at Saint Patrick's Cathedral during the St. Patrick's Day parade in Manhattan, (many years ago)...

When I realized there would be no lights, just candles... the Priest told me not to use a flash... Just like a wedding, I guess...

I used a 50mm 1.4 lens, on a tripod with a cable shutter release, and the fastest ASA Kodak film on the market... They got lots of grainy pictures...that's all a film camera would yield...

So, yes, there are some rules... and they may be permanent, non flexible rules in some churches, like St. Patrick's Cathedral
in NYC....
