There was a metal contest in Atak februari tenth. Four regional metal bands competed to go through to the next round of the contest.
What was kinda special, was that one band brought their parents as roadie / stage hands... I think you'll be able to guess which band after looking at the images.
All images here (http://www.moonglade.net/~rene/070210EHBO/), for those interested.
Since lighting wasn't the best, and I seemed to have an off day, I'll make one post of all bands together; not enough images of each band individually...
1) Singer of "Erebus"

2) Singer of "Sidius"

3) Bass player of "Sidius"

4) Guitar player of "Sidius"

5) "One Bullet Left (http://www.onebulletleft.nl/)". Even though the singer broke a finger recently, so a temporary guitar player had to be found, these guys finished second, average age is somewhere around 14!!! (The replacement guitar player bringing the average age up)

6) Bass player of "One Bulet Left", almost as big as the bass.
He would not have been allowed access to the venue if the parents hadn't been there.

7) Winning band "Chiraw"

8 ) Close up of the singer of "Chiraw"

Your "off day" is still better than a lot of people's "good day" :D Although not alot of energy in most of these for a metal show, they are nice shots.

So this is what metal looks like... well, I'm going to a heavy metal show Friday nite... never been to a "heavy" one before... We'll see if I survive the crowds...
You managed to contain the guitars into the pictures very nicely. This is a very respectable set... The group shot is real sharp too... At least now I get an idea of what the bands will look like...:D
Rene, By all means, when you find the time...you gotta check out my "Kansas" posting from last week... It's already on the second page here... The pics will go on their web site.

haha, does that guy have a 'hard cock' t shirt on? :D
i agree, yr bad days would be most people's good days...not a blazing set, but there are some definite keepers in here (thinking 1 and 2). i agree that w/ metal, some motion blur is likely a good thing. 3 and 4 are technically good, but a bit cold.

Ouch! #2 You're missing a part of a headstock...I thought that was a pet peeve of yours...anyway great shots!
This forum is becoming metal head central!

#2 is the best, good capture of energy. #1 is nice also, but less energy
#3 and #4 are too static.
#5 and #7 are a bit too cluttered, but I guess that it couldn't have been improved much if one wants to get full stage pictures (I essentially just concentrate on single performers in such situations). If I was you, I'd say it is a pity that the singer's hands in #7 hit two other performers in their faces ;)
By the way, my standard for heavy metal is (ultra) wide angle, I seem to be able to get more energy and interesting angels that way. Of course, you need to get in front for that.

About the headstock: In a case like this I don't mind. In a case like this; I do mind:

Still slapping myself for that one...
About the 'Metal Head Central': Not if I can help it...

About the shirt: I first noticed it when I was processing the images... I was like: WTF???
#3 and 4 are a bit static, as was the band...

Agree on 1 to 4.
#5: I think it's a pity that the singer broke his finger, so there was an extra guitar player (left) on stage... Since the singer liked to move quite a bit, people got in each others way....
#7: ;) Now you said it, I agree on the 'hitting' of the bass player.
Maybe this one is better in that respect, but a lot less on some other points:

I always shoot the entire stage from the balcony. Gives a nice overview including audience. If possible I try to shoot an overview from up close.
On the wide: Fully agree but, like I was saying, Light was so-so, and so was I ;)
I did go closer with a few bands,
http://www.moonglade.net/~rene/070210EHBO/source/image/rhd_20070210_ehbo_0408.jpg
With "One Bullet Left" it was quite undoable, since stage was to crowded:
http://www.moonglade.net/~rene/070210EHBO/source/image/rhd_20070210_ehbo_0360.jpg
Also I missed focus on quite a few closer shots, since I had set CFn17 to 1, which caused AF to expand an AF field, and pick focus on something a bit 'easier' to focus on, like a cheek or microphone, instead of an eye
Hmm, had to edit a few 'smilies' out of this post, since they are seen as 'images'... (Insert rolleyes here)

Cropping it tighter from the left would put even less emphasis on the instrument, thus making the headstock-cutting a lesser crime... Maybe also darken his left hand a bit so that the eye is not drawn to it.

Well, these are nice and I don't mind the headstock issues, but damn, you got hair in almost everyone's face! Hardly any of my subjects have enough hair left to create such a problem. [Yes, I am kidding ... I think one or two hair-centric images on these groups that need the differentiation are OK but I still would like a recognizable face.]

I don't mind the hair: Most faces I wouldn't care to see too much of ;)
I like it when for instance an eye just peeks through the hair, like in #6 or 4 (neither of which are very good examples BTW)....

Good point. Don't know why I didn't think of that.... Too much one track mind I suppose...
Did a Q&D, and it is better IMO. Still, I'd have preferred the option of having the headstock ;)
Thnx!
