I'm trying things one step at a time. I first found that I didn't have an ftp server installed on the linux machine, so went and found proftpd. Now, I simply can't get authentication through the web pages. Anyone have a hint?
I've been a unix system administrator for more than 15 years, I know my userid and password do work and I've validated I can cmd line login via ftp.

What problems are you getting and how far did you get through the install process before things start failing?

As far as I know...completely installed...maybe not correctly configured (as in, I did what the directions said...but maybe not enough directions).
Well, when I try to test the ftp server login from the ftp server page, the login always fails (either library used to do ftp). However, I decided to skip the testing, and it seems the ftp of actually uploading photos sorta works....odd. At least the login authenticates and there was file activity.
I browsed and searched but....is there a complete guide of what one should do to 2.02 on a fresh new install to get it completely configured and functional?

It could be something like the paths are set up incorrectly, or just the ftp main server name.
This is my set up. Yours may differ slightly. Also post up the error part of your ftp log so we can see what's going on..

As for 2.02, there is no fresh install as yet, the accepted route is to install 1.54, then install the upgrades on top. It's no great hassle once you get the hang of it.

You know...I bet it IS paths and such...I think I see my error. I only conifigured 1.54 as far as the database setup, then began upgrades. I probably should have gotten 1.54 up and running then upgraded.

Yes, that's what I did. Even though I'm an IT guy like you, I still like to read and understand the instructions before I start off. I've gone off on assumptions myself sometimes and got stung by them (through my own lameness, not implying the same of you).
It does help to start off 1.54 as a separate install and make sure it's happy before going on to the next upgrades, otherwise you end up with the possibility of compounding a problem made in the prior installs.

Only problem is...you gotta find something to read to read it :) I *hate* doing documentation, so I can't blame the author...but it would be a community service if someone did put together coherent and easy to locate documentation.

Read it slowly and methodically. ;)
The documentation is good enough to me to have set up all version up to 2.02 without too much trouble, and I know nothing about web-building or php!

I guess I'm the most dangerous animal then...I do php and mysql myself.
