I plan on taking photographs for soccer. Which lense would be the best to purchase?

I normally would say something fast like the 70-200 f2.8l but then again, it's soccer so...

LMAO

All joking aside, it's soccer, which is usually played in the daytime. I'd go for the 100-400 L myself (which i am for american football...we'll see how that goes, f/5.6 at night scares me :? )

I think, at least this is how i took, he is saying that soccer is slow. Which when watching it often seems that way.

70-200/2.8L is a bit too short on soccer. It will be better to attach a TC on it.

Whats a TC?

Just in case if you do not know the teleconverters, you can click the Extender EF1.4x II and Extender EF2x II:

Thanks. I don't know if I'm that advanced yet. This is my first telephoto len, so I'm trying to start inexpensive to make sure I can get the hang of this.

Actually, soccer can be slow, but has very quick moments and usually when the action is, so that is why it is difficult to film. I would compare closest to hockey. The other major sports usually go in the same direction so it is easier to follow.

The lens I have found to be the one I "need" is a 300 f2.8
I shoot a lot at night.
The ones I "have" is a 100-400 f3.5-4.5 and a 70-200 f2.8
The one I use is the 70-200.
It doesn't have the reach for across the field shooting, like the 100-400
but it works in lower light.
If you are shooting day games, the 100-400 would be great.
If "L-glass" is not in the budget, a plain old 100-300 f4.5-5.6 USM should work for you, just remember to keep your shutter speeds up 1/500th or better to keep camera shake from screwing you up. Use a mono-pod if you have one.

Contrary to "L-caholics" you can shoot great pictures with other less expensive lenses, if the lighting is right!

I started out with a 75-300 IS lens which is about $400. I mostly shooting motorcycle racing. It worked pretty well. I do think the IS makes a difference. The L lenses do make a difference, but not as big a difference as the IS, IMHO. Have fun! :D
