something fast because the lighting sucks.

Go wide and fast. Maybe the Tamron 17-50 f/2.8

18-55, 17-40, the key # being on the wide end. For the price, the 18-55 did a good job for me, but sometimes I had to use a tripod.

any lens that allows you to get the car in frame. 10-22, 17-50 depends how much room you have.

I can vouch for the 10-22 at crowded car shows. Sigma 10-20 for a little less $.

The 17-40 has worked wonders for me, but sometimes i which i could stop it down a little further.

Maybe out of hand here, but the 16-35 ?

indoors or outdoors?

Somewhere around 17/8mm on a x1.6 crop camera, 24mm on a FF. fast or good image stabilised

It matters on the shots you're taking, if you don't want to be far from the car (or don't have that much room) using anything in the 18-50mm range is great and should suit your needs, and it doesn't usually have to be an extremely wide aperture, I take most of my car shots at F/4.0 and up. Ultra Wide Angle lenses are great as well, when you want to fit a lot into a shot but don't have much room. I've used my 70-20mm F/4L for some nice shots as well, although I had a lot of room to take those shots, F/4.0 @ 70mm gives a nice depth of field and enough blur in the background to really get some great shots. =]

I was going to say 70-200 or 300mm 2.8 because I thought you ment they would be moving on the track..

If the cars sitting still in a show room like an auto show. I would go with a 10-22, or a 17-40. 17-55 2.8 IS if you want it on a 1.6x camera.

I dunno man... I dont think ur thinking it through.

16-35 ver 2 for sure if you are using a 1 series camera body (or plan on getting one) 1.3x or FF... IMO thats a waste of a lens if its on a rebel.

Beside for a slight optical improvement weather sealing is the only reason for me to get that lens.

I would actually take the 17-55 2.8 IS lens over the 16-35 if you dont plan on buying / upgrading from a 1.6x crop camera body. Your not going to miss the optics.
