I mainly photograph weddings but have been approached by a company to do regular photography work. They have asked me to supply my "logo" and they will also give me free advertising. This is a fantastic oppurtunity - but one problem - I don't have one!!
I am really stuck - Where do I even start?
Help/info greatly appreciated :)

My wife used thelogoloft.com for her business and was pretty satisfied.

You may even want to talk to a web designer if you know any. Our web designer did ours.

I used a new graphic designer and was quiet disappointed. I change my logo myself occasionally, it's very very simple, just my name in a nice font, arranged in different ways. It keeps getting simpler. Why do you need something fancy? What purpose do you have for your logo? I want people to be able to read my name. A large number of hits from search engines search for my name directly.

I want something elegant and simple. I don't feel I need a graphic designer at this stage.
Thanks for the suggestions guys :)

Best bit of advice I can give from years of logo design, is start with a pencil and paper.

I don't like the bit on the left, text looks funny.

I like the design and keeping it simple is best in my humble opinion.

Generally, I very much like the design you have developed. I might suggest you crop just a bit of the left edge off, leaving the same amount of black on the left as you have above and below the white box. To me, it just seems a little unbalanced the way it is.

I think that looks pretty good.
One suggestion, change the "black" fill colour, maybe use a pastel shade to better reflect your photographic style.
Don't forget though to also print it in black & white, to see how it might look when used on a simple flyer. You might also consider adding your phone number and/or web site below your name.

From a graphic designers perspective, this isn't bad, but the text on the right is very 'flowy' and you're using hard edges for the design on the left. I'd suggest something other than a rectangle. Perhaps an oval turned slightly?

what would you do for a 'logo' if the name of your company was not your given name?
would you try to create a logo from the company name?

I like your logo, it's simple and nice and didn't cost you a penny. That logo is easy to understand as well, I hate seeing logos where you have to spend a while deciphering what it says. Also, Congrats on a nice opportunity. I hope it all works out well for you!

Thanks guys! I appreciate all your comments. I might have another go at it re the oval suggestion and maybe a closer crop. Really, really appreciate all your help and comments.

That's not a bad effort Jo'. Unfortunately I have to say I'm not a fan of fonts that don't sit evenly 'on a line'...particularly when advertising for a product which deals with straightness and perfection. It seems a bit like a font that couldn't care less if it was straight or crooked IMO.
Man - that's a bit too philosophical and I'm not even drinkin!!!
