OfficeMax had one recently for a 512mb, 12X Lexar for $99.00. I ran down & picked one up. It's a dog compared to my 1Gig Microdrive! I started a model shoot with it but got so pissed waiting for the images to write to the card, I pulled it & put in my Microdrive...YES, it WAS that noticable!

That seems to be the trend 256MB Cf cards are cheap, I can get it for $60 at my local best buy.

But I need at least 512MB and those aren't cheap anymore. Can memory prices go up? weird.

anyone else?

Keep scanning ebay, pricescan.com, resellerratings.com etc.

Also keep in mind that you probably won't be satisfied by 8x 'el cheapo' CF card.

Sam's Club has SimpleTech 256MB cards for $43. I bought one to try them out and I have been very pleased with it. I did some informal testing and it was just as fast in my DRebel as my Lexar 40X and my Sandisk Ultra.

Yep. Canon sells SimpleTech cards on their web site in their accessory store for the 300D. Of course, they ask too much, but it would seem to tell me that they've tested the cards with their cameras (you can't get a Canon rep to admit as much, though -- unlike Nikon, who will tell you up front which brands and speeds of CF cards work most effectively in their cameras).

I have two 512 MB SimpleTech cards I got from Amazon for $99 each last Fall. Work just fine.

Doug, you may have a bad Lexar card. I bought one of the same cards from OfficeMax (Lexar 12x, 512mb). I checked it's performance and it was in line with what I expected from looking at the database on the Ron Galbraith site. I got such a good deal on the card that I went back and bought 4 more. All 5 of them have been working great. I know they aren't as fast as the fastest cards, but for me they are fast enough and were a deal I couldn't pass up (about $30 each). It takes about 40 seconds to clear 9 RAW shots from the buffer on my 10D with the Lexar cards and about 50 seconds on my 1GB microdrive. These numbers are consistent with tests that other people have done on similar cards, so I think you may have a bad card if it is slower that your Microdrive.

I just got through buying 2 - 1GB's in preparation of the Mark II's arrival. They were 1GB 40x Lexar's and cost $499 for both.

I also bought one of these (Lexar 12x). It is definetly slower than my Simpletech 512mb. Since I have no great need for speed it will work for my purposes. When I bought it there was a rebate that got it down to $79.00

I did too. Those are great, fast enough for me and price is great too.
I would stay away from Simpletech, I know 3 people myself included who had them go bad. SanDisk never went bad on me so far.

clos,

The one site you must put into your favorites (or bookmarks if you are still a mozilla user) is Slickdeals.NET

http://www.slickdeals.net/

As of today (04/10), they have a 256MB Sandisk CF card for $24 after rebate. or a 512MB CF card for $58 after rebate.

Beware of this site! It's a horrible place to visit if you are trying to save money.

AngryBunny,

You da man! I was going to order two of the 512MB from Amazon but then noticed the Muvo2 4GB MP3 Player deal. Aparantly target has it in stock and is offering 20% off. They say it will ship in 5 days, we'll see. Your right great site!

DaaaveMan,

If Costco has it in stock at the stores I might go out and pick one up anyway. Thanks!

Recomend checking these two sites on a daily basis:

techbargains.com

gotapex.com

There's always some great deals available for CF cards and almost anything else you want. They update their sites daily.

daaaveman,

Where was your post yesterday?? I just bought a 512 MB CF card at my local Samy's Camera (OC, CA) and paid a little less than the Costco 1 GB. The really sad reality is, I am too lazy to try to return the card and buy the Costo one.

You didn't lose out Angrybunny, Costco doesn't have them at the local stores yet so you would need to order them off the website. I ended up picking mine up from Circuit City through the Amazon site. I paid $109 with two $20 dollar rebates. I also bought the Muvo2 with the 4GB microdrive.

Thanks all,

I just bought one of these and my final price after MIR will be $155.99 with free shipping:

http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10340687&dcaid=1688

You have to be a new customer to qualify for the instant $15 rebate then print the rebate form from Viking and mail it in.

I haven't bought from buy.com before so I hope this goes well.

good prices, check the specials. Cheap is not always good, Sandisk and the Sandisk clones tend to die or have problems. Migh be worth an extra $10 to not have a card that HAD 5 hours of work on it that you can't read 1/2 the time.
