I haven't gone through mine yet, but let me submit as exhibit A a shot from fellow Canon XT user Stacie Ann which absolutely rocked my eyes when I saw it:

Take shots like the above and you don't need no stinkin headstock Rene! he he :)

Stacie says:

I'm shooting with a Canon Digital Rebel XT.

I have two lenses. A Canon 18-55mm and a Tamron 75-300mm.

I also have a Canon 430EX Speedlite Flash.

As far as my equipment goes it's pretty basic. I don't use the flash unless I have no other choice lighting wise. I usually prefer shooting with my Tamron lens when I shoot concerts. Simply because I just like getting in as close as I can for those intimet shots.

Since we are chest butting in a sort of left-handed way, I like shooting with only L glass, the bigger the better, and on a 1D bodies. I sometimes cut off headstocks, too, with my 300mm f/2.8L IS, when I'm getting those close ups ... but wouldn't dream of suggesting it as good technique, sigh. So, why isn't Stacie speaking for himself? And the picture does have some merit ... it isn't plain.

you and your "must not be plain" snobbery :D :D :D

actually, good question on Stacie. She's young and shy, but I will invite her to the group, presuming she can meet you and Rene's high standards ;)

p.s for Stacie's shot. I think it was a framing issue. I don't think it's a cropped shot, so to get the headstock in, she would have had to zoom out, adding much more "air" to the already significant amount of air above the guitarist. To eliminate such dead space would mean a literal rectangle of a crop, making the pick look like a web banner.

I will say that the unwritten rule is just that....an unwritten rule about cutting off headstock's. If the image is less about the guitar player and more about the musician then cutting of headstock's is fine. What I don't like is the crop or when it is just barely cutoff.

The picture above is about the emotion of the performer..he just happened to be holding an instrument.

Don't get so hung up on the technical side of shooting that you loose a great opportunity to catch a really good shot...just like the one above.

Since we are on that subject I also get a little tired of hearing things like....the highlights are slightly blown....SO WHAT! If the image captures something great it does not matter. Some of the best images I have seen have portions of them that are over or underexposed.

I've got a project I recently finished and one of the shots the performer liked best was one of him facing the crowd...there are obvious blown highlights because the spot was on him...he loved the shot and wants to use it in an upcoming cd.

Great images are more about what the viewer gets from them and less about what us "know-it-all" photogs call technically correct.

Note the highlights are not blown on Stacie's shot :D

Ok, Ok, I do think the picture is really quite good and certainly conveys the "look and feel" ... but we don't get much interaction when we all simply agree.

I am shooting Earth, Wind and Fire tonight.

My family's good friend, Murry Seaman's daughter wrote a hit song for them... Murry was the Mayor of Great Neck, Long Island and a prominent attorney. (May he rest in peace)...

Heck, I got me some tickets to check out a few bands... meet some gals... make some new friends... it really helps make the show happen...

You guys out there ought to try it sometime...

It's better to be more sociable and get out there and mingle...
You know what I mean Dwight... I'd hate to find out there are some lonely souls out there... It works for both sides...

Just passing the word Dwight...

You're probably pooped from your trip, so it doesn't apply necessarily to you...

In other words, those waiting for a free ticket in return for taking a band's picture...don't hold your breath... get out there and boogie...

Great pic...but just too small... how's about posting them slightly larger... These have to be the smallest pics of all the posters...

Are they ripping you off in Western PA? Or anyone, from anywhere else? I hope not...

Wow, a thread for me? ;)
Nice.
On the first image the expression is very nice, and I don't miss the headstock much. On the second, I think I would actually crop closer...

I don't always mind cropping of headstock, or blowing of highlights. It is a fact however that I think blown highglights in digital look a lot worse then they did on film....
