Location of photos directory

Is there any reason the photos directory has to be or should be located in the gallery directory?

I would like to move the photos directory out of the gallery directory so that when I backup up the gallery directory all I backup up is code. Also, my photos directory is huge and I may want to subdivide it.

you can have the photos placed anywhere in your directory tree that is accessible from the root of the server... i used to keep mine seperate when i ran eE from a directory but since i've moved eE to the root of its own domain, i don't do this any more...

can't you tell your backup to ignore certain directories?

I suppose I could exclude the directory from the backup, but I don't think it is a good idea to mix code and data in the same directory.

i agree but that is rather hard to accomplish when one is running eE from / as in http://somesite.invalid/ instead of http://somesite.invalid/gallery/

then again, if the pics are data, i have to wonder what all the graphics that come with eE are? :)
