Absolutely filthy day here in NW of England. Thick fog, coupled with drizzle made it a very unpromising scene. However, nothing ventured, nothing gained. The overcast conditions did lead to some wonderfully saturated colours.

Some of the fowl I shoot are 'collection' fowl, i.e. cannot fly, and I will annotate future postings with a (c) to denote 'non wild' fowl.

1. Male Wood Duck (c)

2. Cock Pheasant. Possibly our most colourful native bird. I always love trying to capture this magnificent fowl,

3. Grebe 1 Fish 0. It's always great to capture a bird demonstrating an interesting behaviour. Had to use Shadows/Highlights to lift this one, as I was shooting onto water with white cloud reflected off it - almost contre jour!

Really nice color and saturation to these. they all look great. I can't believe some of those shutter speeds though. 1/83s on that pheasant? Wow. :)

Leaning on a windowsill.

I think keeping an eye on appropriate shutter speeds is one of my worst sins (and I have many), i.e. I don't pay that much attention. Sometimes (like Mr Pheasant there), I get a bit lucky. If he'd moved at all, the shot would have been lost.

Thanks Sindri. Do you think I should give the Wood Duck more headroom in the crop?

Well I think that the close crop draws attention to the finer details in the plumage in this super sharp shot so it works for me. :-)
