had a happy accident with this one, focus snapped on the cherry and gave a neat little DOF.

Nice shot. I love the glow of the cherry on the end of the tab.
I am new to this forum after finding it after purchasing an EOS 400D. I've love to know how to pick out a single colour in a black and white shot. I use Aperture to do all my post processing at the moment. I haven't delved into the world of Photoshop as yet.
I really like the subtle red glow of the end of the cigarette.

Cool shot , but, seems a bit bright to me. I've taken a try at darkening the shot.

i think the dark version looks more dramatic for a "classic, hollywood" look

i like the dark version, but it draws emphasis away from the cigarette which was the main subject in this shot, the dark really does make it a dramatic portrait. thanks for the kind words and suggestions
