I'm trying to decide between the two bags. The toploader seems more versatile, allowing me to carry over the shoulder or attach to my chest. This allows me to hike and have it attached to my chest, or if i'm casually walking, have it hang off the side for my comfort. I've read reviews on the orion and because it's a backpack you're able to store personal items, clothing if you need, and some food for a day hike. Can the toploader hold any food? I don't need clothing stored. Comments on either? Thanks

I don't personnaly own a Toploader, but I think there is a known post on the 75.
This bag is All Weather on all size (I think) ! Look in the advance search for TopLoader 75...

But, I own an Orion Trekker, and there you'll have enought space to carry some food, and small clothing ! This bag is not All Weather.

Ciao,
Laurent.

Hi! i have the topload 75AW and i love it! The toploader can hold food if you buy a sliplock bag. I recomend this one http://www.lowepro.com/Products/Accessories/sliplock_cases/SlipLockTM_Pouch_60_AW.aspx
I have the toploader and a minitrekker AW and i use both. the toploader is more versatile because of the chest strap that is a must when your are hiking, the backpack is better when you want to carry lots of equipment, tripod ( it suits better to the urban style... the cheststrat its a litle bit strange).
I say go to the toploader!!!

Nuttcraker!

I am on the lookout for a bag too and am considering the toploader for my 350D+17-40/4L.

Becuase of all the space around it, isn't the 350D 'wobbly' inside the toploader?

If I do get one of the toploaders, which one would fit my requirement? I never take the hood off the 17-40 (NOT reversed) so the bottom has to be wide enough for the hood 'spread' .

Thanks Nuttcraker.

The Orion II will hold a few odd items in the top compartment, but I doubt you'd be able to fit in a sweater or jacket along with snacks/water for hiking. I have the orion and it's a good bag for longer excursions but I wouldn't call it a hikers best friend. For something a bit more trail friendly perhaps look at the Tamrac Adventure series (Adventure 9 looks good).

Hi Sam!

I use the 17-40L with the 24L Hood because its more useful and lot more easy to store. The inside of the toploader is totaly adjustable so the 350D will fit just nice, you don't have reasons to be worry about. If i were you i would go for the 75AW because you can store a 70-200 2.8 in it.

Kit's that i've used with my 75AW:

EOS 3 + Motor Grip + Sigma 70-200 2.8 hood reversed
EOS 350D + Grip + Canon 70-200 2.8 hood reversed

My Top Loader Zoom 75 AW is very versatile. It will hold my gripped 20D with Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 with 1.4x T-con attached, hood reversed, along with a Better Beamer on side, and a couple of granola bars on the other side. Extra cards and cleaning stuff can fit in the zippered clear pouch on the inner top. 580EX flash can fit in front pouch. The AW cover store in there as well and affords the flash some padding. Below the flash is enough room for 2 extra BP-511 packs, and a charger, or a couple packs of AA cells, and maybe a small plastic bag for rain protection. Along with granola bars inside, I can also put more batteries, or a filter etc. There is a sort of pocket inside rear of bag that I slide my lamiated Cheat Sheets for camera and flash into.

I can also carry my camera, with grip and Sigma 30mm or EF-S 17-85 attached, and the other lens stowed in the bottom. I sometimes attach the Lowepro Accessory Pouch 60 AW to the side. It can carry my C5050 Oly with a flash, or my 580EX with external pack. On the other side, I put a lens pouch--usally one that will hold the Sigma 70-200. I can put the other two lenses in that pouch with a some padding (wadded plastic bag). Now with the two pouches attached and full of stuff--it is quite a package to carry, so I got the Deluxe Contoured Padded Shoulder strap. This makes a big difference in comfort! It is a huge pack on my chest with the supplied harness! Hnady, but quite huge! The TLZ75AW really works well together with the Street & Field deluxe belt and suspenders. You can comfortably carry much more stuff. I use two lens cases for 1 liter Nalgene water bottles. They really insulate them nice in hot temps. I also have the Slingshot 300 AW and like it very much as well. I am split between the two systems. The Slingshot doesn't scream camera as much as the other systems. Hope this helps.
