Anyone notice that it says USM on the 18-55 EF-S Lens in that picture?

Yes. Nothing new here. It's the version for the Japanese market.

(Actually, that's also written in the first paragraph of the review, just above the picture ;))

Best regards,
Andy

From a current silver 300D owner... ARGHHHHHH!!!!

However, the nice thing going from a G3 to a silver 300D was that almost nobody knew I had a new camera. Everyone thought it was the G3, and I just put new lenses on it. hehe

Like it or not, Canon is in the business of selling product, and they want to sell as much of it as they can. When you are one of the leaders, it is only good Marketing to not show all your cards at one time. Look at cars - Volkswagen came out with the New Beetle in 1997, and at that time they knew they were coming out with a convertible version as well. But as long as they could sell every coupe they could make, why should they introduce the convertible at the same time and dilute their sales? So they waited until last year, when the sales of the coupe dipped a little, and Voila - something new and exciting! Chrysler did the same thing with the PT Cruiser - hot rod first, followed by convertible this year.

Canon probably has a lot of tricks up their sleeve. This may be a shot at the D70, and if they let the Drebel out in black initially, Nikon may have responded differently - as it was, I personally think Nikon was playing catch-up with that goofy announcement just before Christmas so why should Canon empty their bag of tricks all at once? :?

So we are, to some extent, at the mercy of the Canon Marketing department. Be thankful we have a good quality product to use.

I always thought the silver looked good.
To me, the big difference is with the battery grip.
The black version looks VERY good, like it's all one piece.
The silver version with the battery grip looks like a camera sitting on top of a battery grip. No where near as professional looking.

But, like I keep saying, until they stamp the word "PROFESSIONAL" along the top of the camera, it's not truly pro looking ;)

Nikon must be really worried now: black 300D and a few hundreds $ cheaper than D70 ;) ;) ;)

Just a marketing gimmick. They must have had planned this way back, when they released the Drebal, just in case Nikon comes up with a competitor.

Those who were around in the days of the AE-1 will no doubt remember when Canon introduced a black version of that camera (for more money). A lot of very goofy people.....like me.....bought them even though they had functionally identical black/chrome AE-1s already in their kit.

I guarantee you that Canon knew the black Rebel was coming, even before the silver Rebel hit the market. There will be people who will buy them just for the color.

According to Chuck Westfall of Canon USA the black version will not be sold in North America.
