Hello,
can you explain in detail the technique for getting exposure times longer than 30" with the 300D?
Is it necessary to use a remote shutter?
Thank you.

You have to set the camera in manual mode and set the shutter to BULB.
I use this remote release, the RS-60E

on which you can slide the release button forward so it stays depressed, holding the shutter open. Use a timer of your choice.

You can easily make one if money is tight. They use a standard 2.5mm stereo plug-there's a few how-to instructions on the net.
Then again the canon one is nice to use.....

Thanks for replies. :D
Canon shutter is not an option at this time.
I don't think to be able to make one myself. :?
...but I may try with the notebook...
but actually don't know if it will work.
Thank You again.

You mentioned you might try it with your notebook. I assume by that you mean using the "remote control" software and have you camera attatched to your notebook through the USB cord.
I tried that too, but the remote software doesn't allow for bulb exposures. That means your stuck with purchasing a remote or building one.

You are right: the software doesn't allow that...

Why I always preferred Starsky and Hutch over MacGiver????
