300D auto rotate pictures

When I hold the camera sideways so the picture is taken in portrait mode instead of landscape, sometimes the camera automatically rotates it for me when I save it, and sometimes it does not, leaving me with a picture I must later edit. I have the auto-rotate feature set to on. Why the inconsistancy?

Rotate it with shutter pointing straight up. otherwise a connection won't be made internally.
